I wish I hadn't bought Choosing Death. I may resell it. Swedish Death Metal is awesome though and I've been planning on getting the Slayer Mag Diaries for a few years just keep putting it off to buy records... good thread! I really like reading about the music when I'm listening to stuff especially if there's no lyric sheet to the album. |

The best metal book I read in the past few years was definitely Glorious Times. Got me back into listening lots of old school DM and even checking out some stuff I hadn´t bothered with before. |

go back to page 3 of this thread and look at my first scan. Still the best I know of. Though I think Rock Hard in germany did a big one 10+ years ago but I only saw it once (not sure if it is in german or english anymore) and do not know the name.

Seems like the floodgates are open; yet another book about black metal.
The list of people interviewed seems ok, although very much a northern affair again, it seems. I've never heard of this writer before, but then again I have left Terrorizer and Metal Hammer to the shelves for quite a while.
Quote: | ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’, a gripping look at black metal’s history, written by former Terrorizer scribe Dayal Patterson is available to pre-order.
Offering an unparalleled level of detail, and spanning 600 pages, ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’ captures the progress of one of metal’s most dangerous and exciting genres. From it’s infancy in the 1980′s via it’s resurgence in the nineties and of course the scene we have today. ‘Evolution of The Cult’ combines interviews with a host of black metal luminaries, editorial insight and plenty of iconic photography to examine the artistic, musical, spiritual development of the genre and the creative work, ideologies and often colourful lives of some of its most significant bands, everyone from Venom and Mercyful Fate through to Alcest and Wolves In The Throne Room.
Also included throughout the book are a wealth of images, many of which are previously unpublished, and in some cases, never seen before, with unseen images dating right back to Mayhem’s Deathcrush sessions in the eighties.
You can pre-order ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’ here and check out the the Facebook page here.
As well as a number of archive interviews, ‘Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult’ also includes extensive and exclusive interviews with the following list of black metal luminaries:

The price of this book is making me deaf.
Will wait for a cheap ass used copy, even if it's 10 years from now. |

[quote="doomedplanet"]These are my favorites:
descriprion from T-Mag listing:
Title: Headbangers - The Worldwide MegaBook of Heavy Metal Bands
Editor: Mark Hale
Pages: 542
Size: 22 x 28 x 4,5 cm
Language: english
Colour: B/W
Published: 1993/Popular Culture Ink.
Opinion:
Just to mention it first, this book is hard to find and pretty expensive though I had the luck to get it via Amazon from the Queens Borough Public Library (NZL) - LOL - for about 20 Euros. If you take a look at the sample below you'll easily understand what a mammoth work was printed here. Usually these kind of books do not care for demo bands but Mark Hale seemed to be heavily involved in the tape trading scene because you'll find tons of obscure underground bands entrys here with mentioning year of foundation, band members, ex-band members, and listing their discography as well as a short style description. A few photos are added as well but the main interest was clearly to list as many bands as possible from all over the world! A must to have!

Seems like this guy found a niche:
Quote: | In 2015 Dayal Patterson presents Black Metal: The Cult Never Dies Volume One, the first of a series of books examining in even greater depth this worldwide phenomenon. Comprised entirely of exclusive interviews, many with artists who have never spoken about their careers before, this tome begins the project by examining three facets of the genre in detail, returning to the subject of Norwegian Black Metal, discussing Polish Black Metal and telling the story of the subgenre of Depressive/Suicidal Black Metal.
300 pages and over 150 photos, many previously unpublished.

I've Spoke to Dayal a few times. He's a big Black metal fan and his enthusiasm comes across in his writting and yet he does manage to stay objective. I think he used to write for Terrorizer and Metal hammer so its given access to alot of the bands. I have his first book Evolution and I think its a solid read. I ended up with two copies after my first one got trashed in the mail. He sent me a replacment no problems. Seems like a decent bloke. |
