for me, there is people who love music and there is people who don't really (or just at first degree) basically. lot of people come into a scene (metal or whatever) just to be a part of a community. i hate that concept actually, i though metal was against that kind of thing.

Very accurate point, although I would've hoped, that you'd make that particular point clear via a new comic!! Razz

unfortunately, days only have 24 hours...

It's pretty damn near Mainstream, there's a cartoon (Dethklok) that is based on a lot of real metal, including Cannibal Corpse. Dethklok CD at Target in my book = MAINSTREAM.

When Dethklok (or any CD at Target) has a cover that looks like this, I'll concede the point.

Have you ever skimmed through the music section at Best Buy or even Wal-Mart? They do carry stuff by CC, Vader, Krisiun, Behemoth, etc. that I've glanced over and noticed there. Of course some of the albums with more extreme artwork have censored covers but they're still for sale at a mainstream store.

Also, one might argue that the internet or sites like myspace for examples are even mainstream. A lot of bands as I'm sure you know belong to such groups.

On top of that, I've briefly listened to KROQ (a mainstream radio station based in Los Angeles) one morning and they even had a small discussion on thrash metal (the topic came up while speaking on the new Metallica album) and also had a member of Weezer jump in and talk about his "metal roots" and where he came from and whatnot. On a seperate occasion the DJs had mentioned Cattle Decapitation! Tell me that isn't mainstream enough for you Laughing

Hmmmh, I think doing a cutīn paste zine f.e. is a good way to keep traditions of the metal-underground scene alive.

A lot of the "traditions" you speak of have long been dead and all the bands you adore have abandoned it for something more efficient. If they were so concerned with keeping old values, why would every-fucking-band on myspace not cancel their accounts and just let the 'zines handle their exposure and promotion? Let's go back to tape trading and forget the internet ever existed lol. While that was a good way at keeping posers out, it's not giving the bands what they want.

It's acceptable for nostalgic value alone if one entity is doing it and doing it well, but when everybody from buttfuck Africa comes crawling out of the woodwork and does it for the sake of being "that guy with a 'zine" without realizing its purpose, it's ridiculous and most of all, fake.

When I read threads like this one it makes me wonder if everyone on this board is 15 years old.

Exactly. Mongo threads/attitudes as they are presented in the op are what makes metal stink like feces, no collector mania or whatever.

I now officially feel old.

I always thought fixating on that "keep the posers out of metal!" mentality went away when one moved out of their parent's house and, you know, grew the fuck up Confused

I keep waiting for someone to explain to me how the members of the ANUS message board are going to change life as we know it.

Is that like when chicks fake orgasms?

Because if that's the case, I can totally understand why Prozak made this thread, having never satisfied a woman and all.

Did you ever get that sneaking suspicion that some metalheads are "faking it"?

Sure, they have bought all the right things. They have the posters on the walls, the tshirts, the CDs and rare vinyl and maybe even some classic demos.

But they're faking it and you can tell because they don't understand metal as being different from rock music, indie, emo, punk -- you name it!

They've picked metal as an identity, because they need some cause in order to claim their lives have meaning, but they don't seem to understand it at all.

It's like they're spectators at an art gallery who say "I like the red one; red's my favorite color!" or tourists visiting a battlefield when they can't remember who the two sides were. It's like they're not actually engaged with life itself much at all, but want to dress up like metalheads so we think they are.

Faking it

what a retarded thing to care about
