Record Boy was the one I found the most interesting things in.

But basically every record shop I visited had something I wanted, even the big ones.

I can also recommend you to visit Akihabara, if you want some cheap electronic stuff.

Check out Annick's blog from when she visited Japan. She probably has some good tips on record stores in Tokyo.

I'd highly recommend making a trip to Nara and visiting the ancient temples there. It's a lot more relaxed than Kyoto or Osaka.

Record Boy, Shop Base, Nat Records are the most well known names. Maybe smaller ones. From what i've been told from anyone going to Japan you can find mostly anything if you look hard enough, but expect to pay the price.

Outside of record shops, there's plenty of excellent temples and gardens well worth visiting when you want to take a break from kvlting. One of those things that should go to at least once especially having the opportunity.

yessir, this is the one. they have shops per music style, one floor with hc/punk/crust, one floor with metal, one floor with 2nd hand stuff. in the last section i found excellent stuff; some 1st press japan cds from Venom and Exhorder. i also bought the Slayer live undead as original I-LOVE-PENIS LP. highly recommended to go there.

I just returned to the US after being stationed in Japan for a few years.

Disc Union is great; I prefer the one in Yokohama above Penta Studio. They have a decent section of both metal and punk, categorized by sub-genres and then alphabetically. Some very good used finds pop up once in a while. There's another Disc Union in Ochanomizu that is solely metal and classic rock. Also, vinyl tends to be priced much cheaper in the record shops of Japan compared the US - one of the many things I miss about the place. However, CD's are usually more expensive there than in the States.

As far as gigs go, you can look around on here:
http://extreme-gig.com/

It's in Japanese, but even Google translate should be able to make it semi-understandable.

Also, if you're gonna be in Yokohama, seek out a bar called Thrash Zone. It's a small place, but they have good music and very good beer, including some homebrews (Hopslave being the main one) by the owner/operator of the place.

edit: This website (in English) is very useful for figuring out the train system - http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/

Buy a couple or five packs of the deer biscuits too.. they are so lovely and sweet, you'll have a great time feeding them...
