I just stack my CDs on top of each other. Literally stacks of a few hundred CDs. Its a pain in the ass when you need one on the bottom they usually all just fall over, its like playing metal Jenga.

I've got something similar to Ikea Benno but I got it from a local handyman shop, probably a lot cheaper then Ikea stuff. Which, in most cases, really isn't as cheap as people tend to believe.
Half my CD's are more or less on alphabet (well, sorted by first letter atleast) in those towers, half of them is in boxes or on the ground or on my desk. I'm currently making an inventary of all my CD's and surprised that I have so many.

Nah, I set those aside.

my cds are in various boxes in my closet and around my house. i keep them out until the piles of cds encroach too much on my living space then i put them in a box and forget about them. that is, until i freak out and try to find one. then its like the game memory trying to remember what box its in. i hope i just sell ike 75% of them one day. i really dont need most of what i have. there is absolutely no order or organization to my cd collection (or lp collection). i hope to change that one of these days.

I find that these Ikea BILLY bookcases are ideal. I just use some thick pieces of cardboard as shelves (you can fit 2 rows of cds on top of each other per shelf)...

All of my cds are organized alphabetically and by genre (black metal, death metal, "war metal", experimental/avantgarde, thrash, heavy metal & hard rock, rock, doom,etc...) Doesn't take too much time to organize because I usually leave some room at the end of each row in case something new comes.

I've also got a nice black bookshelf that was expecially made for cds (on the right of the pic) but I still prefer the Billy bookcases for being much more versatile.

This pic is a bit out of date, but you get the idea...

I have about 25 of those Ikea Benno shelves and need more. All is listed alphabetically, categorization sucks for me, it's all subjective in the end. The only thing that's not in alphabetical order is my girfriend stack of about 25 cd's.

Same here. Though I finally ended up sorting at least my cd's last weekend after having another fit of rage because of not being able to find the one i was looking for.
As for cd storage - plastic sleeves for the cd's, stored in boxes. Jewel cases are a waste of space.

This is something I've been thinking about lately, I mean taking the cd's out of the cases, especially considering the amount of room that would provide.

I have a friend who used to have a huge CD collection (2000+) and he kept them in special 'books' where you could put your CD's together with the front and backcover but without the jewel case. An elegant solution if space is getting problematic.

Yes the CDs get damaged. Those books are not a great solution
