I recall the Det Hedenske Folk demo to be really great stuff, chaotic and violent but still with plenty of atmosphere.

Nåstrond's Toteslaut album is one of the best (and most underrated) Black Metal albums of all times in my opinion, this album just reeks of DEATH.

These are the classics. I'd add:

* Graveland through FTVOB
* First two Gorgoroths
* Demoncy - Joined in Darkness
* First two from Rotting Christ and Varathron
* Absurd - Asgardsrei

These have the euro floating in air spirit, in their own way.

A lot of people only like the 2 first DB albums. To me, those 2 albums are so shitty, that even their later albums are many divisions better. Which says alot, those albums are bad too.
Espesially For all Tid is horrible. Crappy songs and lyrics, crappy production and their playing is horrible. This albums has no power at all, it's just.... weak.

I like the first three Dimmu Borgir albums. Actually I think they're better than the Mayhem or Emperor debut.

Been curious about hearing this band for a while. Always seemed interesting as one of the 'lost' Norwegian bands.

Just makes me wonder who would even expect any particular traits of POWER, PRODUCTION or MUSICIANSHIP when it comes to the golden age of norwegian Black Metal? It's more than obvious that those things weren't definately the most important things those bands sought in their creations.

And yes I agree that DB's early works weren't exactly Satriani.

True, but one of the few American albums that can compete.

1990-1994 was the golden era of black metal. There's about a dozen releases outside that time period that are worth a shit, but few even touch the total classics:

* Burzum - first three
* Immortal - first two
* Emperor - first two
* Mayhem - first and live
* Gorgoroth - first two
* Enslaved - first three
* Graveland - first four

Everything else is a pale imitation.

I like some modern bands like Bahimiron, Prosanctus Inferi, Blaspherian, etc. but most of people from this time don't understand underground metal for shit.

Hades - Again shall be

"Unholy Congregation" demo version kills the full length version. In fact, I prefer the whole demo over the full length. Has a more raw sound to it.

Agree! The guitarsound on that demo is really good!
Both Hades-fullengths are being re-released later this year btw.

No thanks, Ill stick with the demo.

Werwolf wrote:
Burzum up to Filosofem

While I'm not knocking the importance of BURZUM to the scene ( ...dont know why ), I found the releases boring. The 1st CD had its moments, but, that couldnt stop me from getting rid of it.

Werwolf wrote:
Mayhem up to De mysteriis

"Live In Leipzig" for me. I think this captures what MAYHEM was supposed to be / sound like. Plus, Dead was on vocals... enough said.

Werwolf wrote:
Hades up to Dawn of the Dying sun

As I previously mentioned in this thread, the demo only for me. I know its a matter of preference & peoples opinions vary, but, what makes you people like the full lengths? Have you people heard the demo? The sound of it alone kills the full lengths.

Werwolf wrote:
Ancient up to Trolltaar

I only like the BLACK SABBATH cover / hahaha.

Werwolf wrote:
Darkthrone up to Total Death

I only like "Soulside Journey". Fuck the rest of the shit this band released. Nothing can top their 1st CD. CRAPTHRONE & SHITZUM are the 2 most over-rated bands in Norwegian history ( ...not including MAYHEM after "De Mysteriis..." ).

Conservationist wrote:
* Graveland through FTVOB

Besides the "In The Glare..." demo, this band is shit. Over-rated shit.

Conservationist wrote:
* First two Gorgoroths

"Antichrist" & a few various songs thru the years. I think it would be great if they would post their lyrics, but, I dont see that happening.

Hello everybody

I really like the demos from COVEN OF THE WORM (1992-96) from Germany. Very crude, but with some unique riffing.

I like Filosofem ONLY.
Although they aren't bad and have few standouts, I find Burzum's metal works pretty weak overall. Later ambient stuff is true garbage, IMO.
Filosofem is story for itself. Actually, one of my all-time favorite albums.
