The left pic was also used for some advertisements.

That's a special edition Osmose did, after they released the Digi-CD. 2000/3000 copies or something like that which include the first two 7"-tracks as bonus. You are missing the Slipcase somehow on that pic, as the CD came with one of these annoying slipcases.

Yeah, I read it should have a slipcase, but the condition is a bit fucked anyway, so i don't care. I basically just got it because of the 7" tracks. I still need that 7", but no luck so far.

The 7" tracks are also on the True Kings of Norway digi that Spinefarm released. I'm sure you want the vinyl, but something to keep in mind. Not sure if they are remastered or not; I don't believe they are since the Ancient tracks sound much better than the remastered tracks on their Det Glemte Riket reissue.

Does anyone really have the original CD of this? Stop bragging and start ripping. Razz I've only heard the white cover/digipak mix and it ruins the album. I'd love to hear what the original mix was like.

I had the Osmose promo version of Battles (received it just prior to release) and also heard the released CD and own the LP version. The audio on the promo and the album are exactly the same. Only the cover of the advance was different and as someone mentioned there were some adverts wtih this image.

The story was as simple as the band liked the blue images, but closer to release Herve pushed them towards the white cover that was issued officially - Abbath and Demonaz in the snow. The photos were taken by Abbath's father. They drove 3 hours north of Bergen, would take photos for 5 minutes and then back in the car to warm up and so on...

Amazing to think that that record is 14 years old. I think it sounds as killer and chaotic as it did back then. What came after, well that's another story, but the first three LPs are ripsnorters!

This promo cover photo is way better that the one used for regular cds. Read somewhere that the photo used for promo was taken in times when Armagedda was still in the band and they had to erase him from the photo.

You interviewed Immortal in the Heresy zine back then? I remember that the answers were much longer than what he usually bothered to type.
Edit: That Vondur interview was a hilarious one.

ha ha, yes I definitely had a knack for interviews it seems. And yeah Vondur was a classic. I would have been surprised to find IT so funny had I never heard Vondur, but it all seemed to make sense after that.

I'm actually trying to put a book together on the philosophy of Black Metal at the moment. Take a look at www.thestenchofblackmetal.com

Interesting project.
Has it been easy/hard to get worthwhile contributions? What's the ratio of invitations vs. participations? Some artists who you really would like to participate?
I guess schedules in work like that are no good? That's my round-about way of asking any idea when it might come out heh?
Too bad Ike Vil/Babylon Whores wrote his masters thesis (about devil, worshipping & rock music) in Finnish. I think that might have been interesting for you to read.
Here's a link to Finnish users on the forum in case someone is interested in reading that:

Coming back to the Immortal cover:
I found it hilarious to notice how Demonaz covers the headstock of the guitar which seemingly isn´t one from their endorsement deal - at least that is what a friend and myself thought.
Should have been possible to cover that logo with a black sticker or something like that to make it look less awkward...

Still a great record for me nevertheless, blasting it now.

In truth it hasn't been easy to get people to contribute, but I wonder whether the apparent simplicity of this project is overwhelmed by the complexity of what I am actually trying to get at. I haven't thought so much about who needs to participate, and have been approaching people at random wth a desire to fill in the gaps as the project draws closer to conclusion. SAdly this is a loooooong way off ha ha.

yeah I would have been keen to read Ike's thesis. I'm sure he offered a great insight as well as a grand execution of thought.

Feel free to tell anyone you think may be interested about my book idea to contribute their thoughts via an interview.

The blue image struck me as really intense, so I got the "limited" version but I don't think the CD press looks the same as the picture above. There's something about that image that is really intense.
