Academics and journalists on whether metal is a culture.

I found this pretty interesting because I've always known that metal isn't quite rock music, and metal fans are unlike any other music fans I've ever known. Even when I was a jazzfag, and the people around me were dedicated, I found nothing like the fanaticism that metal creates.

It's too much to ask that we get a separate physical nation, but I'd settle for people mentioning metal in the same breath as other cultures.

I guess so

Plenty of arts & crafts, an image to be cultivated, large bodies of like-minded people

All thats missing a staple cuisine

To me metal is culture, but not high culture. Some into Black Metal seems to think it's high culture saying it's like opera and you have to learn to enjoy it or what ever. They will have to get the dominant cultural powers of society on their side to make black metal high culture.

Shoegaze is a culture, indie is a culture, neo-folk/martial industrial is a culture, punk is a culture... so is metal.

I took a friend of mine sat. night who is a jazz freak to a metal show and
he thought the unity was great. He remarked it was almost like it was it's own culture

it often exists in its own little universe so in some ways yes, it has aspects of being a sub-culture.

...but that groups you in with all the overweight goofy kids in Children of Bodom, In Flames and Pantera shirts. I'd rather keep my distance.

If you define culture as how a given group of people do things from music, visual art, values, aspirations etc. then yes Metal is a culture.
