sure, they've always been a little bit KISS, but that record cancels out all the hilarious poses they did afterwards. Even the video has a certain charm to it...

Pure Holocaust is by far their best album imo. I always thought DFM wasn't that good at all. The recording is pretty bad.. sounds like a bad death metal recording in a way, the snare drum annoys me and the songs and song structures don't lend well to repeat listenings. Just my opinion.

Their best, for sure.

I don't like Pure Holocaust. Irritating production and song arrangements on it. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way and I get really pissed off and agitated when I hear it. If I want to torment and drive myself nuts, I'll put that record on.

Aside from Diabolical, they're just an embarrassment to Black Metal and really should of never existed.

The first two are both really good. Cattles In The North Einherjum was a boring exercise of speed without purpose, lacking the atmosphere of the predecessors. That morbid angel-album is the last I've heard from them.
When it comes to later albums, which ones are worth hearing?

That was why I wasn't able to get into it: it was the most literal-minded thing they've released. Black metal was always admirable for its sense of subtlety in explaining difficult truths about life... but Battles in the North is more like a grindcore album, all literal.

Maybe I should give this one another listen to see what I think of it these days. I've owned several Immortal albums in the past, and have ended up selling all of them. To me, they're dull, over-rated (mainly because they look funny), and have probably the shittest vocals in black metal. On second thoughts... no, I won't check it out.
