It just made me stare at the vinyl for an inordinate amount of time looking for scratches that weren't there.

It does sound like horrendous scratches. The kind you used to get if you set down a beer on a picdisc or something and left a ring there. My Live Undead picdisc had one of those and it drove me MAD.
