I mean personally, what bands when you think back on it were the most important to YOU. Not what were important to metal or whatever but just you. like when you think back on your teenage years the bands that stick out in your mind. i guess the bands that define your age...

Maiden (first record I ever got was their debut from an aunt in 1986).
a lot of the old swedish and german death metal from the late 80s and early 90s. morgoth, entombed, carnage and tiamats first record especially...
shamefully admit that obituary would be in there if i was going down memory lane.
then black metal stuff like beherit, impaled nazarene, black crucifixion, burzum, immortal, mayhem, bestial summoning and samael etc...

Most important to me:

1.) Ac/Dc: Got me into hard rock/metal music with the album "Back in Black".

2.) King Diamond/Mercyful Fate: Led me into black & death metal. Sparked my interests in Occultism.

3.) Burzum, Forgotten Woods, Bathory: The "3" BM bands which kept me interested in dark and Satanic music.

4.) Skinny Puppy: Convinced me that I liked electro/industrial rock better than metal.

5.) Fields of the Nephilim: Convinced me that this is the world's most perfect & emotive band.

The first Metal band I got into was Manowar. They've been been my favourite band since I first heard them, and still are. Not for any other band would I swap Manowar.

MELVINS, MORBID ANGEL, BATHORY, DISCHARGE, CARCASS, JOY DIVISION... Countless others, as I pretty much lived my childhood and teenage life wearing headphones.

When I first got into black metal I was like a lot of people...I only had access to the few albums in my local stores, so I heard the typical cof and dimmu shit before anything else...and then I heard the opening riff of "Ye Entrancemperium" and it totally changed what I was looking for in black metal. Totally dark and frenzied, it made me realize how cartoonish the shit I had heard before was. Not sure if I should give credit to Emperor since it was a Euronymous riff, but still...that was definitely a turning point. I almost never play that record anymore but it definitely pushed me in the right direction.

Death metal will always be my favorite, but that was the beginning of my appreciation for good black metal.

Most important bands (without which I would not be here today likely):
Metallica, Slayer, Morbid Angel.

Black Sabbath for ruling the universe with an iron riff
Twisted Sisters/Kiss for getting me into Metal in 83/84
Metallica for really kicking my interest into high gear as a teenager, and probably why I got stuck with playing guitar
Death for getting me into more extreme Metal
Darkthrone for showing the way into ugly Black Metal

Then of course other bands that has been with me for some time and meant a lot to me; Judas Priest, Motörhead, Pentagram, Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Morbid Angel, Slayer, Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Candlemass, Iron Maiden + + +

Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction opened the dreams to be a rockstar if "grown older"...

Then there came many bands (Death/Black Metal ones).

Since more than 10 years I only can answer LIVING DEATH (Hurricane, Hellpike etc...) + COUNTESS (Kneel Before the Master's Throne). Those two bands have had musically the biggest impact on me. There are still other thousands of bands that are IMPORTANT to me as well...

Funny thing while finnishing the current HELLPIKE issue: I just checked "my top 10 fave list" from the very first issue (1999) and believe me or not, I would mention them again...

Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Motorhead

As boring as it might sound, they are my top top top... then after, I have about 10 other important bands.

And for Black Metal I have to say BATHORY, the most important band in the metal world (no matter what you think Cool ) and the band that opened my eyes to the true metal

Wink Bathory was the one that did if for me too, when you hear UTSOTBM when your 13 back in the day...it really did sound like the most 'evil' thing ever!

W.A.S.P. was my intro to metal and I still love their early stuff, a bit of 'cheese' is good for you!

I really can't remember which DM band I heard first, I know the one I was most blown away with when I was young was Dismembers LAEFS. I can distinctly remember hearing Darkified for the first time too and thinking...'perfect', thankfully theres been a few of those moments over the years.

I'm a complete 'fan girl' for Alchemist these days, and my most recent 'love' has got to be the Russian doom band Scald, never been a big fan of doom, or those style of vocals, but Wow!!! So now I'm delving into more doom I've never really bothered with.

Hopefully they'll be years to come of discovering eyeopening/life changing/whatever you want to call it bands!

The Misfits (they are one of my favorite bands)

Old Metallica

Deicide- Serpents of the Light ( The first time I heard this CD I was hooked. I remember one of my friends had it in his car, so he let me borrow the CD. I am glad he did because the album opened my way toward death metal along with Decapitated- Spheres of Madness music video. Very Happy

Dark Funeral, Destroyer 666, and Marduk are the bands that got me onto the path of black metal. I still listen to the bands today.

Napalm Death
