Guys, I guess I should have spelled it out in the beginning. What I'm interested in hearing about is what you've come across with your friends or people you know for whom Metal was just a phase.

Particularly how long it took them to get out of it from the first "warning sign" to actually starting to sell off CDs etc. Also for how long they were professing hard-out Metalheads.

As mentioned earlier, what I've seen so far is an average of 5 years of being into it followed by a period of approx. 6 months where they start gradually but quickly getting out.

I'm sure most of you have heard the stories of 1991-1993 and in the case of my friends, it was the typical one. Totally sold out Thrashers who got a whiff of Nirvana and then next thing you know anything and everything labeled Seattle or alternative follows. 6 months later they've completely changed.

Amazing how fucking stupid some people can be. People's interests change. If they lose interest in metal it doesn't mean that they never really were that interested or that it was just for fashion.

Enjoy your elitism. You're all ever so special.

IT DOES MEAN THEY NEVER WERE REALLY INTERESTED, AND IT PROBABLY MEANS IT WAS JUST FOR FASHION.

It is what it fucking is man, 5 years of Metal? pff that's nothing, and of course, most of these dudes that stopped listening to Metal when they were 22, let's say they started listening to it while they were 17yo? which reminds me of all of these retro Thrash kids and their scene that is full of wagon-jumping kids that are trendy as fuck Rolling Eyes

I mean, look at them, it seems that they took retrofashion101 at school and studied pictures of Metallica, Exodus etc. Laughing

I find the 30 something year olds with balding long hair, leather pants and 666 I_LOVE_PENIS mentality much funnier. Hail Germany!

A lot of the original Bay Area scene was hive minded and trend oriented. As a genre, Bay Area thrash didn't care as much about being underground as death or black metal. They may have hated the glam bands, but arena success was a goal for them too. The new bands we have in California may suck, but they have the same mentality the B-grade bands of the late 80s had.

Averse Sefira said it well, something about Metal is there forever, but interest in it waxes and wanes. There have been times I feel like I'm sick of Metal, but then comes that killer release/discovery that re-ignites the flame.

i think that sometime happens to people who's only into one style of metal, and when their favourite style has turned to shit they might rather listen to some other stuff. actually i'd prefer nirvana or soundgarden over most of the late 80's-mid 90's thrash...

I grow tired of people involved in Metal, not the music.

In my own case I started listening to metal in 1980, I stopped for a period of time in 1989 (got into punk and alternative music) and came back to metal in 2002 with a vengeance. Full circle.
