From what I've seen, if someone gets into Metal during their teenage years 22 is usually the age that they grow out of it and for the most part these people who grow out of it are only into it for a max of 5 years.

Your thoughts?

I don't think those people were true Metalheads. Metal, for me is something you take with you to the grave, Metal is the inner flame that that keeps me going in my every day life. I am 23 and I got into Metal when I was 13yo and first listened to bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. It opened a world to me I could never get enough of. 20 years from here when I hit 43 I will still be headbaning and listening to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead etc.

Umm 22 years? The first Concert I ever saw was Maiden on the Killers tour at age 18. Still into metal.

First Metal Show was JUDAS PRIEST on the British Steel Tour in 1980 age 14...

So...
If you are truly into Metal you are likely a lifer... you might listen to other genres as well, but the Metal will always be there!

Pretty much the same here, first started listening to Maiden just before I turned 13 and here I am some 20 odd years later.

The reason why I started the thread is coz I've got a bandmate who's leaving and let's just say it was quite interesting watching him over the course of 5 months moving on from what was a phase in his life. The guy's around 22.

Of course this also got me thinking about friends from my late teens and how they got away from Metal and into grunge, again over the course of about 5 months.

People who "grew out of" a musical genre probably just wore it as clothes in the first place.....

Fancy eh? Smile

i'm still in my late teens but i've been listening to metal for like 8-9 years already, so it's not very likely that i'll grow out of it...

Amazing how fucking stupid some people can be. People's interests change. If they lose interest in metal it doesn't mean that they never really were that interested or that it was just for fashion.

Enjoy your elitism. You're all ever so special.

This is almost as bad as the "Favorite Cheese" thread. And yes, we are elitist bastards, thank you.

Hypothetically speaking:

Metallers say someone's a 'fucking poser' if they grow out of metal, but if you started listening to metal after, say, 10 years of listening to pop music (for example), would pop music fans call you a 'fucking poser' for defecting to metal?

I've listened to metal for two thirds of my entire life, so can't see myself growing out of it, but tastes change, and people change. Like Tom said, it doesn't mean they never liked it in the first place.
