Is this zine worth a shit? Hearing a lot of hype about it lately but hesitant to throw down $...

Awesome, awesome 'zine. And not just because I was in it once. The interview they did with Adorior is fucking classic.

It's a cross between Descent and Terrorizer.

I hate it. Nerdy pseudo intellectualism, ass licking reviews, outsider-looking-in attitude. It's trendy modern shit.

I don't like it because the writing is bad, interviews are boring, and the design, while decent, feels hokey.

Yepp, that one's great. But mainly coz of Melissa's leave-me-alone-alike-answers. It's in #2, isn't it? The third issue was the last one I bought. After that I only read it up at friends. The whole writing style has become way too pretentious imo. The writers tend to blow up nullities 'bout the music like they were groundbreaking news. And while it's just natural as well as understandable to support one's native scene I can't stand the praise of so much lousy US bands in there.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am trying to avoid.

I really like it. Not all of the bands featured are my bag but it is certainly well worth a read. The layout alone makes it worth the few quid.

I accept all criticisms of Oaken Throne. However, I have issue 2-5, and am willing to trade if anyone is interested.

I enjoy it and find it a good read for an "non-commercial" zine. I also don;t see the wrong in writing good things about bands one likes/enjoys listening to - to each his own. It's John's zine and it is his prerogative whether to promote or slag off bands he likes/dislikes. The point here is if i were to publish a zine, i'm doubly sure i will write about bands i like/enjoy listening to and promote the hell out of it. Isn;t that what zines were created for in the first place?

Sure, the writing style can be a bit daunting, but I have enough patience to enjoy Oaken Throne zine.
