There are the "usual" gateway bands like DIMMU BORGIR, CRADLE OF FILTH, etc. A lot of gothic-tinged stuff like SINS OF THY BELOVED, THEATRE OF TRAGEDY and whatnot rarely get played, although TRISTANIA's Widow's Weeds is still one of my favourite albums. I still like all of those, but my horizons have expanded past them, and I rarely feel the urge to listen to that style anymore.

the only stuff i really grew out of was alternative rock. and metallica, who i listened to a shitload. and then there was jr high pop skate punk. and then a bit of straight edge hardcore. and then there was "screamo". i still like most of the old hardcore punk stuff though from jr high: black flag, dk, minutemen, government issue......i try really hard not to get rid of my music, looking at a complete cd/lp collection is like reading someones life story. no one can deny that they were at some point lame shit.

I don't get the "growing out of" thing. A classic is a classic forever and I haven't nor do I ever see myself "growing out of" something like "Don't Break the Oath", "Show No Mercy" or any other record I've listened to thousands of time before. Often I get new shit and listen to it only once, before putting on some old record I've heard before. If I was forced to have to limit my collection to only 100 releases, I'd be able to get by and most of them would be shit release in the 80's.

Getting bored with something is one thing. But aside from that, whatever band I used to like, I just discarded realizing they sucked shit and I was stupid for liking them at one time. I really don't see much of a point in listing them either.

If this is for metal bands which we used to listen to when younger but have grown out of, I would say Machine Head, Pantera, Cradle of Filth, Dying Fetus and Six Feet Under. However, if this is also for bands which helped get us into metal which we still listen to, I would say Deicide (early), Morbid Angel, Nile (some of the earlier records are still alright in my books), Mayhem (first got into DMDS), Darkthrone, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death (first grindcore band I got into), Slayer, Sepultura (one of the first death metal albums I bought was Morbid Visions) and Motorhead.
