A recent talk on the "Worst album cover" thread made me create this topic.

The topic is centered on HR/HM and even good rock but Thrash Metal and other genres are welcome too.

Please avoid bands whose member are of "exotic" origin but began to play in a Western country, like WEAPON.

BTW, Malaysia is probably the most obvious place but has been discussed many times and has a long history in Rock then Metal, so they're not "exotic" anymore. Same with China which has a mature scene now (but we maybe can consider the 80's or 90's).

What are your faves, your discoveries, the bands to avoid at all cost, the bizarre history behind some recordings? YT or BC links are welcome.

I'll give names later for my part.

I'll never understand why some Metalheads have interest in the whole Malay "rock kapak" HR/glam scene. It's fucking lame and the fact is "exotic" doesn't make it any better.

There is a lot of pop/ballad trash for sure but also some good melo metal stuff like early Power Metal, first Handy Black, Saxo... I wouldn't call any of it classic or hidden gem, but it's cool to listen to from time to time and the malay language gives it some unique flavor.

Here is a good song from Power Metal "Power One"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVzZoXdkNHA

And a more decent example of those rock ballads, from "Power Mission"

For real Metal with malay language and no sugar-coated ballads then I suggest the BLACKFIRE "Lahir Dari Api" album. It was recorded only in 2004 even if they were the first malay BM band (in the 80s/Venom way) but is still great, and available for very cheap.

Forgive me for being an illiterate idiot but I do not understand what you mean, you mean bands from unlikely countries? there has already been a thread like this (but I cannot find it), or bands that sound different?

BLACK FIRE are a great band.

However, Mr CR99 is right that there were some cool bands, like SAXO. One great record is JUNCTION's Petualang whose huge King Diamond influence is a hidden gem from the country along with Lahir Dari Api.

Enjoy here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roEUS_Zuz-k

I've checked some bands from Mongolia and most of it is ballad Rock like most Malay bands, I'll stick to YAT-KHA when it comes to this country.

I've checked some bands from (South-Saharan) Africa and the quality is surprisingly good for countries with no real history.
I've discovered this band this morning: https://www.youtube.com/user/skinflint123. Their music is nothing groundbreaking or even great but more solid and metallic than a lot of pseudo-HR from Asian countries.

I heard of this band years ago: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaLOt5vooGeFcoYicdtDZQQ. Their music isn't exactly heavy but at least they have their own personality.

Are there any good South-African HM band to check?

Another fave of mine is TANG DYNASTY from China:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba4jXBnkLvo

. Their mix of proggish HM with Chinese classical music is IMO very interesting and quite well-done.

EDIT: I mean bands from unlikely countries, countries with no real HR/HM scene and history.

Power Metal is from Indonesia.

Raven Wolf demo 1992 is great epic power metal. "Cradle" EP 1995 has some good songwriting but also some fruity folk rock & flutes added in that might kill the enjoyment for some.

Voice Of Destruction is kind of interesting, started out as hardcore punk and then death/thrashcore. Could do without the silly moments though. I like "The Seventh" demo 1992 best.

(^both bands feature Diccon Harper of Pagan Altar fame btw.)

Odyssey's 1991 LP is pretty good.

Love Pharaons from Madagascar. I wouldn't call them "good" but I like this kind of inept noisy punk metal. And it was pretty ballsy to play any kind of anti-communist songs at that time and place.

I know. No offense to anyone from these countries, but as an ignorant european I kind of lump them together when it comes to music.

It's just fucking beautiful to read that sentence on this forum.

Either way, Pharaons (Thrash from Madagascar) is one of my favourites as well.

Please stop thinking there can be offenses in honest mistakes! Wink

PHARAONS are very cool indeed. Too bad the rerelease CD costs $30 and doesn't contain the "forbidden" songs.

EDIT : There's an official RAVEN WOLF channel on YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg8ptTniDd924xZGO_aF7Ow.

No mistake. I was deliberately mixing Indonesian and Malaysian bands together to simplify things for myself.

Max The Nomad was going to print a definite edition of the Evil World album with the songs omitted from the tape release btw. We had some talks about a possible joint release (I hoped for a more reasonable price & distribution in Europe) but now as he's fallen silent again I don't know if it will ever happen.

You can check the story of Raven Wolf as well as a lot of pics and artwork on their homepage http://www.ravenwolf.za.net/
It's nothing outrageous (also I think it still just ends halfway through), but it's a neat little read about a band barely anyone knows outside of a little circle of old local fans.

There's an Indonesian band that was actually kind of rifftastic, I can't remember what it was though. I thought the name started with I or J but my records didn't find it, although I have the album. Also their guitarist was an apprentice of.... I want to say Satriani?

Hard rocking tunes. Don't care much anymore though.
