This is something I have been wondering for a long time. I use ebay and internet forums to find some tapes, but if a tape it TOO OBSCURE for an internet forum how would I go about finding a tape? Would I have to travel to the city, and if I did, would I go to 2nd hand shops(do they even have cassettes?) or would I find metalheads in the area that have tapes?

The reason I ask this is because the only three tapes that are on my wantlist are impossible to find online, and even the band members whom I have contacted do not even have the tapes...

Put them up in a wantlist, get in touch with some mates who live in the same countries as the bands your after, thats all i can suggest

Going to 2nd hand music shops is hit and miss, especially in a foreign town. I find that you have to visit regularly to pickup something cool. If you stroll into a shop outside your hometown and find something you've always wanted sitting there waiting for you then your damn lucky.

I've posted my five-item wantlist on almost every metal site, and in over seven different languages! Still no luck though....

I am most likely going to fly/drive to these towns to get the demos, but my question is once there what should I do/where should I look?

That's dedication. Very Happy

What tapes are you looking for?

Patience and luck are the key. Some people find stuff I've been looking for for years in a matter of months.

Call me the pessimist, but depending on the tapes, there's chances it will take years of active searching, if they ever surface, then again it's also a matter of luck. While I've had troubles finding demos for years, I managed to find Cabaret For Bereaved's 1995 demo (one I thought I'd never own personally) through someone within a month or two after I heard the thing 3-4 years back. At the same time though there's plenty of demos I never expect to see now matter how much I've searched.

Just gotta try looking, and talking to anyone possible.

I think if you put your wantlists on forums and discuss about them everywhere then this attracts more possible interested parties: you will have more competitors if item appears in online auctions or lists (= price will be higher) and then bootleggers get idea what to produce (= replica or fake) or you just get ripped off.
And most probably old bangers (we speak about 80s tapes right?) who still might have those items do not read those forums.

Demo tapes are more difficult to track down imo. You won't have any luck finding demos if you travel to a city as no second hand stores buy/sell tapes anymore. I've seen some of the demos you're after on the internet and in trade lists in the last 6-7 years at least once. Patience and asking people if they know someone who would be willing to 'let go' of said items is your best bet.

More often than not.

In the current age people expect results fairly instantaneously- It can take YEARS.

Guess not because he is after originals... no copies, replicas/fakes or selfmade stuff.

I got strong feeling (and experience too by the way) that this guy can not be trusted. This opinion I have gathered during 4 years or so.
