Priest, but that's probably due to overexposure to Maiden in my teen years and the most popular Maiden songs just annoy me now.

Was there a Blasphemy vs. Beherit poll?

I wonder if there was a Incantation vs Immolation poll.

Priest. Though I love both, Maiden has rewritten the same riff their entire career.

Two of the best metal songs were created from both camps. Priest with "Victim of Changes" and Maiden with "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."

Maiden is much more epic than Priest in terms of lyrical and musical prowess. Priest, next to Sabbath, is the most important heavy metal band. Priest gets the vote in my book. 70's Priest is some of the best metal, hands down.

It does, but I still prefer Priest now.

When Maiden are at their best and grandest (say in 'the evil that men do' or 'hallowed by thy name') this is absolutely true. But Hell Patrol, Blood Red Skies and The Sentinel are definetely in the same ballpark.

I don't listen to 80s Priest as often as I did in High School- but when I do, Defenders of the Faith wipes the floor with everything and everyone else!

Priest all the way. Maiden sounds like Maiden, Priest sounds like Heavy Metal.

Fathers Slayer covered Priest....and not Iron Maiden Smile ,too melodic for them!

But Iron Maiden is not a band. It's a mania!

Slayer didn't need to cover Maiden, they already rendered homage to the gods with "Crionics", the most Maidenish tune ever made by a "non-Maiden" band Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Slayer used to cover Maiden’s Phantom of the Opera live during early shows...

Judas Priest. Nowadays when I listen to Iron Maiden the songs sound too similar to me and all blend together, as opposed to really sticking out. Priest has a vastly more diverse discography, in a good way. The highlights of Priests career will forever outshine the highlights of Maiden.

Sounds like I'm shitting on Maiden but these two bands are in my all time favorites.

I don't remember, but somehow these kind of polls are unfair :

Beherit themselves have said that at the day they received BUTA they decided to play in this style, so it's a matter of hierarch here - you should compare equal time bands.

I may be a Blasphemy freak, but each band have it;s own strength points :
Blasphemy are masters on their evil and catchy song attacks, while Beherit are unmatchable on this special evil atmosphere they are creating.

Back on topic,
Judas Priest are an older band than Maiden, and in fact IM opened for JP in 1980 - IM were on the time of their debut LP while JP toured for the "British Steel" album ! - see what I mean ? it's an unfair comparison !
And while I'm a Maiden freak, I'm considering Judas Priest as the archetypical Heavy Metal band : if someone ask me "what is Heavy Metal ?", I would send him to buy the "Defenders Of The Faith" album to find out for himself.

These Polls are not unfair. They are completely meaningless.

Perfectly understood and exactly why I asked about Blasphemy and Beherit. It's a kind of like comparing Priest and Maiden.

Both are garbage, but Priest less so, so i would pick them.

Maiden then, priest now, but by an absolute whisker. Strangely enough I found Classic Maiden so much more accessible than Classic Priest. That said, Maiden have a more consistent discography. ST/Killers/Piece of Mind/Somewhere in Time vs Sin After sin/Sad Wings/Stained Class/Defenders..near impossible to pick!

There is no wrong answer here. Unless your answer is Judas Priest.
