The vocals in general are bad, the music is good tho.

Indeed, musically speaking this is very competent, but this album is one of the very few cases where the vocals get in the way of the music, ruining the whole experience.

Luckily, there is instrumental version of this demo/album.

I don't quite get the fuss over the vocals. I think this album is killer. And yes, I did chuckle the first time or two I heard the vocals, but I still think the whole package works.

It‘s a weird clusterfuck, but I love it. A hundred times better than the überrated and ultraboring Soulside Journey.

Take a break from Pentacle and worship this weirdness.

I've never understood the purpose behind this release.
Why they recorded vocals to it a couple years later and included it to their discography is beyond my understanding.
Absolutely unnecessary album imo.

Not very difficult to understand.

They recorded the instrumentation for Goatlord after Soulside Journey, as it was a death metal album they shelved the recording when they decided to record A Blaze in the Northern Sky as their second release instead. In the mid 90's Fenriz dug out the tape and recorded vocals for it and titled it Goatlord in honor of the band Goatlord.

For me a very important album. I listened to it constantly throughout high school, and was even almost obsessed with it....and I still put it on from time to time. No comments are really needed on the obviously insane vocal performance and the riffing and song structures border on almost hallucinogenic or dream-like underlining that this is truly demented Satanic death metal. Drum sound and playing is unique and like a labyrinth. The rehearsal sound gives it even more twisted intimacy and the riffs are fucking EVIL. Just listening to that wide eyed and panicked opening that introduces Rex and Fenriz's opening scream, gives me chills every time.

An essential Darkthrone release, the deformed and neglected bastard child of the classic era of their discography.

Could not agree with this more. An absolutely evil recording. Mandatory Darkthrone imo.

Pretty much like all 90s Darkthrone imo.

Great album, one of my favorite Drakthrone releases. I got the CD shortly after it was released and was obsessed with it. Love the atmosphere. I don't think I realized for a few years that it was Fenriz on vocals.

Regarding the "female" vocals, I think Fenriz said on the re-issue commentary track that he recorded those parts using a really slow speed on the tape recorder, so when played back at regular speed the pitch went way high giving it that falsetto sound.
