I have re-listened to the first 5 albums this weekend. The results are in:

1. KTA - totally holds up, a legit ripper even by the today's standards, practically zero filler, with the Phantom Lord perhaps being the exception.
2. RTL - opens up with a killer 1-2 punch, then it starts losing steam progressively, with Escape being kind of the worst of the bunch, until The Call comes in and it's pretty much the best metal album closer ever.
3. MOP - more of the same - the first 2 songs are killer, then it gets a little less focused, Sanitarium and Disposiable Heroes being the low lights of the album... but then it kicks into a crazy high gear on Leper Messiah and Damage Inc just crushes.
4. AJFA - a solid, uber consistent album. It has a a very even flow to it, with almost no filler as well. One was never my huge favorite but hey - it has made history and it has riffs that most bands would sell their left nut for...
5. BA - not my cup of tea at all, although Wherever I May Roam has its moments. Nicely produced though.

So no suprises - the first 4 are still legit masterpieces, although some songs did not age very well. From 1990 onwards the band has lost it.

How? This is one of their most ripping songs?

I wouldn't take the opinion of a person who seem to hold AFJA over the first three albums seriously. First three albums all reap, hardly any subpar songs.

And to those who mentioned Escape on the previous page, fuck yes! Amazing track that a lot of retards seem to dislike only because it differs from the rest of the tracks on the album.

Ride the Lightning (Vocal Track):

Good use of shrieking singing & screams & reverbed to hell production.

That's Lars screaming behind "I don't want to die" line.

edit: Well, you could read that in the comments as well. Anyway, Lars rules.

Their best album and Trapped Under Ice is such a cool (and different) song.

Wish they played it live these days.

Fuck this. The album could have been just fine without Orion or The Thing - fucking mediocre song. Disposable rips.

while I agree on The Thing, Orion is one of the best metal songs ever.

Completely disagree, Thing is arguably the heaviest riff James ever wrote and Orion is amazing also. There isn't a bad moment on the album, in my opinion anyway.

Holy fuck, don't see how anyone could take off any-single-track from Metallica's glorious trilogy. Now THAT's revisionism at blasphemous speeds. Some of the best album productions ever as well, at least some personal faves of mine along with Maiden's Piece..., Slayer's South... and AC/DC's For Those...
Master of Puppets is still the best metal album ever for me along with Reign in Blood and Retaliation.

I heard the album when it came out and I never liked The Thing. It's heavy, yeah, but boring as fuck. Orion is a great instrumental but I always felt it never really fitted the album. The Call of Ktulu was far more integrated into RTL, which is by far the best Metallica album. I never changed my mind about MoP, I have the same impression I had back in the day.

Ride The Lightning is the only one I really need. Perfect from start to finish.

MoP is largely boring and bloated, can't stand it really. It insists upon itself. Each song has some killer parts but it just goes on and on and on and on and on.

Listening to the Metal Up Your Podcast. I was surprised to learn that they actually did a video for For Whom the Bell Tolls, which remains unreleased.

I remember watching a music clip of it on MTV though?
