Yeah, it was the DF / Hellspawn guy, bad memory...

As far as I remember, the guys just stopped distribution of it. It's kind of a strange to story, filing a lawsuit against someone who pays tribute to you. Well, now he's dead.

Do you go after bootleggers?

"Does that mean you plan to manufacture illegal crap sporting a Bathory logo or copy official releases and sell these?"

Yes, I'm going to release the bass tracks from Octagon on double-LP.

"The nice thing is that Bathory fans around the world will let us know if they come across some really awful bootleg. They'll even register the name of the shop owner or anybody they got in touch with, note the address, prices, etc. Some small shops have had their windows smeared with dog shit or pigs blood poured down the letterbox at night. We have the best fans."

Could you explain what happened with the Bathory tribute album released by Hellspawn Records?

"More than a year before it eventually was released, the guy responsible for putting it all together (a huge Bathory fan and once a member of a Black Mark act) approached us and showed us the layout and told us something about tons of acts contributing. We said, 'Fine, great, keep up the good work. However, you might want to change the album cover.' It sported the Bathory logo and our goat head.

"We then didn't hear from him for about six months, until we heard that not only had nothing been done to change the cover, but a photograph by an English photographer had been added, a photo they had not asked for permission to use. We then made contact with him and told him that if he was going to release a commercial product, he might want to pay some attention and follow certain business rules. The only thing he had to do was to follow some legal advice. He didn't bother and subsequently breached international copyright laws. Not only did he use other people's protected trademarks and photograph, a few weeks after it had actually been released, it turned out he had not even reported the product to the proper royalty instances. Subsequently the product was illegal in every way.

"It wasn't our case. It was a case for the Swedish court. When they realized what deep shit they were in, they approached us and we made an agreement. They were allowed to sell the first batch they had produced, but they weren't allowed to manufacture any more. We know they have produced tons of the damned thing, but realize we'd only do that product a favor by raising hell. To us it was a drag. We weren't against the product at all, we just asked them to please change one thing and perhaps ask for permission to use that photo. It wasn't about greed wanting to prevent somebody from making the few bucks the CD would make. It wasn't about wanting to stop somebody for putting a CD out with Bathory music on it. It wasn't about being a pain in the ass for no reason. We had absolutely nothing against him personally or the many acts contributing with cover versions. As a matter of fact, we were giving him advice and made ourselves available. Would he want me to write a short note on the sleeve or something? Would they need lyrics or help in any other way?

"It was simply a matter of an ignorant amateur putting together a product without paying attention to the fact there were laws to follow when using other people's music, photos, and trademarks. But like I said, we know it is still being produced and sold, and we know from where and by whom. And we would only do them a favor by raising more hell. There have been other Bathory tributes produced by people with slightly more intelligence. In Conspiracy With Satan only made the top level of legendary items because it was originally put together by people who'd step on other people's feet, break international laws of copyright and protected trademarks, and who didn't bother to follow standard royalty and product number procedure."

There's a rumor saying that he got the name 'Quorthon' from an occult book he ordered from the mighty Pekka Siitoin. I wonder if it's true.

Interesting interview indeed, very laidback.

yeah cool read. seems like an honest interview.

fucking classic:

"So when we recorded we had so much leakage going into the microphones so we used these small, condensed microphones. We sort of scotch-taped them onto the drum skins. And then we used about one hundred percent compressor on top of that. So it sounds very much like a machine, but it's not a machine, it's just a snare drum, a bass drum and the right cymbal."

Love his answers.
You think he's exagerating, but they all seem to be very valid.
Mind trip haha
