This is around the time my disillusionment with death metal kicked in. Bands selling the fuck out.

Heartwork, Fear Emptiness Despair, Grave’s Soulless, World Demise, Domination, Demanufacture, etc etc.

Bastardized a fantastic genre of music, bands claimed it was creativity when these bands were adapting less creative sounds.

I had no clue about that fundraiser. Ironic, definitely? EHG did preach a message about destroying yourself and living a nihilistic lifestyle, but when push comes to shove, you are only as tough as your music.

Not sure what you mean by that, care to elaborate? In my view, if the message of the music is not backed up by a real, lived ethos, then it's just a pose. None of us live out our ethos with perfect clarity and consistency, but then again most of us don't get on a stage and preach a message to audiences.

I think it's a bit naive to assume that if a person is writing songs about killing christians or wanting to destroy the whole of humanity, he or she would actually do these things himself. In underground metal, the value of being "true" to the ethos of the songs is often emphasised to a ridiculous degree. After all, it's mostly just songs we're discussing here. Of course there are some notorious exceptions that we're all familiar with, but at the end of the day, most of the stuff out there that we worship is made by fairly ordinary people as a way of expressing the emotions that they have to suppress in their daily lives. I wouldn't consider an artist a deceiver if he's not executing the same actions that he's depicting in his art.

Yep, all terrible albums with the exception of Domination. Add Wolverine Blues to that list of course! That "death" of death metal is what drove me to uncover the 2nd wave of black metal emerging at the time though.

Darkthrone and Burzum died for me when Fenriz and Vikernes became more infatuated with social media stardom than with Malin decent music. Fenriz should never have cured his depression with old school metal and Vikernes should never have left prison (though Belus and Fallen are spectacular). Youtube killed the black metal star... (and where the hell is the revenge for killing the soul of Mayhem??... Speaking of which, I use to like Grand Delcaration but as the years pass the more I feel that it should never have been released as a Mayhem album)

Semi-off topic due to genre: The only band that really has disappointed me is Ulver (which is ridiculous really, musicians are always free to do what they like whatever their poor fans feel). Not with their electronic stuff, I worship that stuff as much as the early albums, but rather when they did Shadow of the Sun and then went on to be hugged to Death by the bourgousie art establishment, playing in fucking opera houses and art galleries, making melodramatic pseudo-experimental pop music. Even the wolves hid their teeth I guess.... Suddenly they were big shots and not underdogs anymore.

I saw the Der Sturmer/Auschwitz Symphony Orchestra split while semi-drunk YouTubing and didn't realize it was a split. I was expecting Der Sturmer with an orchestra. Their side of the split was cool....ASO not so much.

Well, I became a Metal fan after the 2000s, so I hardly got any really big disappointments. The last one I remember that did kinda hurt was listening to Macabre's Grim Scary Tales and being bored to tears by it. I wasn't expecting a Sinister Slaughter or even a Dahmer, but I thought they'd at least deliver something at a Murder Metal level. It was a fucking bummer.

What is deceptive about new Darkthrone albums? Everyone knows that there is 0% chance that they will sound like the golden era. If you don't like the direction they've gone in (for the record I don't either) it's best to just move on and concentrate on bands doing stuff that you enjoy now.

Well maybe it's just me but I think their later works are some of the finest and unique thrash metal modern time can offer. But yes, most of people (no matter metal or not) care more about lyrics and image than actual music.
