A classic Mercyful Fate poll. If there was already a poll for this, then kindly disregard. I've tried searching, but to no avail.

Two remarkable, flawless epics right here. Pick your preferred album, and feel free to go into details as to why you went with that one over the other.

My vote is easily Melissa. Why? Better flow over the course, and it ends in such a melodramatic manner, while "Come to the Sabbath" also ranks pretty high as a definitive album closer. "Evil", "Black Funeral", and ESPECIALLY "Satan's Fall" are chilling, far and wide unlike most other albums I've listened to. "Curse of the Pharaohs", "Into the Coven", and "At the Sound of the Demon's Bell" are also very distinctive, atmospheric songs in their own right. The whole thing is flawless. The addition of "Black Masses" only spices things up a bit more. Such a great chorus.

Of course, Don't Break the Oath contains plenty of leftovers from its predecessor, with one of my favorites being "Nightmare". That was the song that truly won me over King Diamond's vocals. "Welcome Princess of Hell" is also an infectious tune. "The Oath" is just dark as all fuck. Not a huge fan of "Night of the Born", but "Gypsy" makes up for it. "A Dangerous Meeting" is such a great opener.

The band had a LOT of great songs in the beginning. It would've been cool for a song such as "Burning the Cross" to have made a studio album debut, as keeping it as a demo-exclusive song is dishonorable. I got a bit of a Heavy Load bite on that one, hence why it's a true keeper among the Mercyful Fate catalog.

Melissa for me. It was the first MF record that I heard, fell in love instantly and still love it more than any other albums. Every song is a hit.

"Don't Break the Oath" obviously, it's in every regard the better album (songwriting, production, artwork etc.). I am glad that "Black Masses" was not part of "Melissa", such a mediocre song. "Burning the Cross" on the other hand is one of their best songs, but obviously it was dropped because its songwriter left the band early, but at least one riff got recycled for "Devil Eyes".

I went with Melissa, but this was a tough choice. Don't Break The Oath is right there with Melissa. Both are obviously essential.

I got the 1985 European CD pressing of Melissa. It's not mentioned anywhere on the booklet, except for the back side of it.

Yeah, I remember that being the reason why it wasn't carried over. Attacker did the same thing with "Trapped", which was written by an earlier bassist. You can hear that song on the 1999 reissue of Battle at Helm's Deep. Speaking of which, Attacker has always been proud of their Mercyful Fate influences, haven't they? Their three vocalists remind me so much of King Diamond.

Shit. Both excellent albums. Think I'd go with DBTO though. I mean, I did get it tattooed on my arm.

@ Black Masses: The early version "You Asked For It" on the demo compilation is way better in my opinion.

I got Return of the Vampire. It's a pretty neat compilation album. Original first pressing on CD, too.

I'm still trying to find the original version of The Beginning.

The only reasonable answer to a poll like this.
