just something i was thinking about the other day, im assuming when you press albums you have to give X amount to the band for each LP sold correct?
so lets take the newest morbosidad LP as an example, and say YK gives the band 1.50$ for each lp sold, well then he trades 20 copies to masters throne, does the band never see the money for those 20 copies since YK traded them and didnt sell them?

in our case, traded away means SOLD. its quite common. I know about labels that first have to sell the traded stuff to count them as sold, too...

Edit: KAAAAAOOOOSS

When talking about press runs between 500-1000 copies (or more), 20% sounds quite accurate. Of course in smaller editions 10-15% is normal.

I am sure there are very few labels, barring the bigger ones, that pay royalties on the units sold. The band is given copies that they can in turn sell, thus making some $$$. At least this is how I have always done business.

I usually give 10 to 15% unless the band is bigger already.

I believe 10% is really not much at all. If the label pays for recording expenses it might be acceptable, otherwise not.

we pay the bands in free copies and $$$, sometimes only free copies, sometimes only $$$, sometimes both.

usually we will give the bands free-copies for 1000 cds and with the 1001 copy we will pay them.

that's the way I know...

For vinyl releases 10% are fine in my book. CDs are another story.

We split the total profit 50/50 after the first pressing of something, then again after 2nd, and so on.

For bands copies, I usually negotiate with them how many they want. 10% is about right.

Indeed, 10% is okay. When I am thinking back at "Dogma Antichrist" times - the band got lousy 5% of both pressings (CDs/LPs) (but alot of cash for the studio, which unfortunately is not to hear in the sound, haha)...

If you're paying a band $1.50 per copy of an LP limited to 1000, would it make sense if possible to pay them in advance?

That's what I would do.
