The Crowley one absolutely rules! Never heard Misery's Omen, but the cover really makes me want to hear it!

That Nifelheim one is fucking cool of course.

Pushead has done much better work. Like the artwork for Septic Death for example. I've always loved the radiation baby in a bottle art.

Quorthon's interview from Metal Zone/Slayer zine, where he tells the story behind the cover of Under the Sign Of Black Mark.

Quote:
Concerning the cover of Under the Sign Of Black Mark there are several people who think it is a painting, which it actually isn't. The story behind the cover is actually a bit unexpected...
-The thing was that I called up the Stockholm champion in body building who was called Leif something (Ehrnborg). He is on the thanks list I think. Anyway, I asked him if he would like to do the cover. I was planning to rent some stuff from Swedish radio equipment. Sacrificial stones and stuff like that. We were planning to build a satanic temple. A bit mysterious... But it didn't work out as it was too expensive.
-I then thought that the opera should have something so I went over there and asked what stuff they had. They said that "of course we have rocks, mountains and stuff like that, but we are using it all in Carmen at the moment". I asked how long it would take to set it up and if it would be possible to rent it. That can't be done, they said. "These are French original pieces from 1890, insured for 20 million. But of course you can take pictures between two acts".
-So I called up the body builder guy, fixed some smoke, bones and stuff like that. He wore a Bathory mask and took place on the stairs in the middle of the stage. The curtain was down and the opera was full of people waiting for the Carmen. So we took the pictures and put one of them on the cover".

Wow, for real? Cool story if it's real. Bathory mask? That sounds awesome, would love to see the original one.

Here's a great painted cover wasted on a terrible band:

Actually I'd say Verwimp has a unique ability for throwing away good art on bland or outright bad groups. You know how when you see a Seagrave cover you figure there's a 90% chance it's going to be a quality release, and a 25% chance it'll be a full-on classic? Verwimp is like the opposite of that - poor bastard. He has blown a couple of good ones on Sathanas, a completely useless band as far as I'm concerned.
