Both, actually. They brought a lot of the death metal mentioned in the initial post to the US: Unleashed, Morgoth, Asphyx, Tiamat, Grave, etc. Then the "dark metal" wave like Moonspell, Samael, Tiamat (again), The Gathering, etc. Not to forget Demolition Hammer, Despair, etc.

They did a good job in the 90s to release a lot of stuff here (USA) that was only available on import before: Mayhem, Emperor, Opeth, Satyricon, Gorgoroth, Katatonia, etc.

Europeans can thank them for putting the Combat titles back on the shelves in the 90s and again this year.

I guess after reading these posts, my opinion has changed on what they did contribute to metal. THe distro is still good. You can get those two on one deals Samael, unleashed, etc. for 8 bucks a piece.
I forgot about a lot of the albums mentioned.
I love the first two sentenced a lot.
Rotting Christ's Triarchy is a great album also.

I only ordered the Hellhammer's Demon Entrails 3LP edition and I was quite surprised that their shipping to Canada is just a mere $4 but it doesn't compare to ordering a DLP from another American distro with shipping that is just a fucking mere 50 cents!!!!

They also did some killer reissues of the Possessed releases in 99 I think. The digipack ones. Also not to forget Dead to this World just now recently. Wink. Not really familiar with what they are doing now anymore, but when I grew up they were really a big part of my cd collection.

US vs. European label are growing differently it seems. They have some of hte same top-level bands (Haunted, Napalm Death, Arch Enemy) but some different ones too. Wolf is EU only vs. Nachtmystium USA only, etc. US office also handles Nuclear Blast, whereas in Germany they are competitors.

The new Wolf album is amazing. For that reason alone, Century Media can stay open.

I'd give credit to Osmose for those two monumental Samael releases, not Century Media and their lame reissue.

what distro was that?! maybe they add the cost of shipping to the price of the record. or just take a hit with shipping. cause I KNOW it costs more than 50 cents to ship a dlp to canada!!

I love 'Where No Life Dwells' by Unleashed, but looking at my effects, I dont possess much of that label's wares. In fact I am usually surprised when I pull something out from that label. I was really into Nevermore for a while though and love Ulver's third. Oh and who could forget that Sigh release 'Imaginary Sonicscape' - a masterpiece to be sure! They seem pretty quick to bin their more 'out there' artists.

I love Ceremony of Opposites but Blood Ritual is the pinnacle of SAMAEL's career for me. That album is up there next to Drawing Down the Moon as the greatest piece of Occult Black Metal for me personally.

And that first Morgoth album is incredibly good... yes, these days are LONG GONE!

Were any of you into metal when those kick ass releases came out?

Asphyx

Haha! Good to have a constant. I neither liked Asphyx when I entered the extreme realms of Metal in 1994 nor like 'em today. Well, apart from "Embrace the Death" which is a real gem.

T-O-T-A-L-L-Y agree on this.
