Irreversible I didn't like at all. I still have it on DVD-R somewhere. Got to find it and toss it in the trash.

Henry was OK, but the real Otis was far more of a disgusting and disturbing human than as portrayed in the film. In the movie it actually seems like he has some brain cells. The movie is largely based on fiction though. I don't believe either one of them were as prolific as they claimed to be.

Irreversible seems to be a matter or taste, or bad taste depending on how you want to look at it. Totally pretentious, but great at the same time.

Of course, 'Portrait' was a fictional account loosely based on true events, however the fact that the events in the film are absolutely believable make it disturbing for me, as opposed to a guy being burnt to death and returning from the grave to molest children in their dreams Laughing. The film itself isn't actually all that great, but the narrative and style were effectively disturbing for me.

I think that August Underground's Mordum went above and beyond Henry, as far as realism and violence goes. Well, it seemed real until Killjoy's unless role in it.

But I hate that "let's be as disturbing as possible" shit. Too easy to turn head and get attention that way. It takes no talent. It's actually the most safe thing you can do, cause you know people will react.

Dario Argento using lighting, mood and music to disturb you. Now that's impressive and more of a reflection of a dark artist.

Mordum was pretty dull but totally snuff-like. I guess the idea was to show the banality of torture and murder rather than entertainment.
I totally agree on your point. Argento, as well as the old greats F.W. Murnau, James Whale etc are/were certainly a lot more creative in terms of portraying atmosphere and emotions through cinematography.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

It's amazing what they turned a child killer into for the horrible sequels!

When I was a kid I was blown away by the first Creepshow movie. The zombie in the first story, Leslie Nielson burying Ted Danson to his neck in the sand on the beach as the tide comes in, then the resulting zombies

Those were heavy times....

Phantasm, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hellraiser 2 (I think it's the sequel where the characters go to hell) also hit me quite effectively.
