I think it's an amazing film. Don't get me wrong, I love the original film. But I'd say I like the Herzog one more. |
The remake was hugely atmospheric, especially those scenes you describe. The shots of the castle interior have a particularly haunting impact, especially the skull clock that goes off erratically.
Hated the ending though, that ruined it for me. |

While I don't agree that the remake is better than the original, the remake still ranks as one of my favourite movies. Definitely one of the most haunting and atmospheric movies I've ever seen, I tracked down a copy of the soundtrack by POPOL VUH as well. |

The Vampires in Carl Dryer's Vampyr
The half man snake in sssssssssss
The lady on the ceiling in Exorcist 3
The silver sphere in the first phantasm
The experimental brain autopsy zombie in day of the dead
The statue that chased Katherine Black in trilogy of terror
Side Note:
Tom Savini came to the University where my wife works
and gave a lecture for the mass com. dept.
The guy who got him booked was a friend of his and was the zombie
that pulled taso's head off in day of the dead. That scene haunts me every time I see it when his vocal chords change pitch as his head is pulled off.
Savini was super nice and very patient, and then I became the little fanboy and got him to sign a bunch of shit. |

Well, not a disturbing to the core character but Mrs. Baylock is always good for a frightful shiver imo.
