Personally likes simple, blasphemous lirycs without any deep messages or such shit for ex MAYHEM - Deathcrush, but also allways loved lyrics like in early RUNNING WILD, (first album of) EXODUS or (whole) METALUCIFER.

Always thought Amebix had great lyrics that stood out. " I awoke in a sweat / from the American dream".

Slayer "reign in Blood" has great lyrics.

Too many to mention.

Agree with the previously mentioned Nuclear Death -Carrion for Worm: just such a sick nightmare! and pretty much all Destroyer 666: eternally glorious lyrics! You can see it happening all around you.

Would add most stuff by Order from Chaos as well as Angelcorpse. Mentions to Gospel of the Horns and Celtic Frost too.

I'm gonna say that Martin Walkyier (Sabbat, Skyclad, etc.) is probably the best lyricist in all of metal. The guy's a fuckin' poet, I tell ya! Laughing

Sarcofago, duh!

But really I have to admit I listen to metal more for the music than the lyrics. Most lyrics are really nothing special and sometimes knowing what the singer is going on about ruins it for me! I prefer straight-up retarded blasphemic lyrics over something that tries to be too "intellectual" because there's nothing worse than someone spouting shitty poetry in any kind of music, not just metal...

I second Destroyer 666, especially "Unchain the Wolves". "Genesis to Genocide" and the title track are pretty much the epitome of metal lyrics!

Also:
Countess ("Son of the Dragon" and "A Warlord's Swansong"!)
Megiddo (especially "The Oath", "Four Suns", and "The Atavism of Evil")
Bolt Thrower (everything from "For Victory")
Cirith Ungol (the stuff from "King of the Dead" is epic!)
Order From Chaos (minimalist, yet meaningful)
Atomizer (especially the last few albums)
early Judas Priest

Hah, I was gonna start a thread with this same topic.

I'm a traditionalist and enjoy the simple evil cliche stuff.
Although there are many great bands (some who have been mentioned already), For me personally:

Bathory (up to B.F.D)
Venom (W.T.H, Black Metal and singles)
Deicide (up to S.O.T.L)
Slayer (up to R.I.B)
