What are your thoughts on this? I'm speaking of bands that have
broootal names like (making these up) dead labia cunt eater, or
massive penile sperm blockage into urethra, etc.
You know, the bands that take autopsy photos, shots of little kids torn in two by trains, someone getting doo doo on their face.
I am not offended by these, but as a Surgical Assistant that has helped on necrotic bowel resections, prolapsed anus surgery, amputations etc., I think these broootal guys would be running for the trash can after about two seconds of the smell. Not to insult those with gore avatars, ( these are cool) but I am talking about bands that constantly do this.
I would much rather see a Moyen, Seagrave, or cover with a nice serene foggy country side in norway than this crap.

Good point. I even have a few of these, but you are correct, when a
band touring can't even afford gas or food, I totaly understand why they would do this.

Honestly I've always thought it was pretty disrespectful to use these pictures without permission. I mean if my grandmother died in a train crash, I sure wouldn't want to see her remains on a Disgorge CD at the metal shop.

Some of the best covers have been drawn by a bandmember. Sure, the technique is shitty sometimes, but they have character. That is why I adore old flyer artwork so much.

I thought nu-goregrind kids moved on to coprophila, photoshopped chainsaws, mainstream porno, and hentai? It's sad how dead the true goregrind style (CARCASS/XYSMA/RGTE, etc) is these days. Replaced with computer bands and wigger slam...absolutely nothing in common with what I'd call "goregrind".

Internet definitely killed decent real-death covers. I've always liked the stark atmosphere of a well-chosen one from old pathology atlases or other sources, especially in b&w. Really added to the nasty and fucked-up aspect. I think there's even a VOMITO ep with a pic of a gory accident actually taken by a member of the band. Much more effort than right-click n' print for sure! I also like the implied message of "this delivers exactly what you think it will", regardless if it's the cover of a DEAD INFECTION, UNSANE, or ATRAX MORGUE record.

CRIPPLE BASTARDS had a split 7" with an interesting pro-gore art rant in it...I should dig it out again.

First of all Iīm not a big fan of photos on covers at all. An expection are landscapes and covers in early DARKTHRONE vein.
I think the cover of DEAD INFECTIONīs Surgical Disembowelment LP is very cool. No gore at all, but pics taken in a hospital which they made themselves.
Iīm not against covers with dismembered bodies, I just donīt like them much, but I totally despise everything including vomit, shit and toilets. Thatīs just low brain garbage to the max. I canīt listen to bands who have farting, burping and vomiting samples in their music, this bores me to death.

I totally agree with that! Somehow goregrind has evolved into a very mediocre direction, lost much of the "spirit" you're speaking of and that's especially visible when looking at these post-2000 photoshop covers and logos.

So TREBLINKA's "Crawling in Vomits" bores you to death? Wink
Was very surprised myself to hear vomiting voices when I first listened to that demo, even if the title suggests that...

I used to think that these photos were cool and great to offend people with back when I was 14-15, but now I just think that its kind of boring and don't really see anything in it apart from "shock value", which is pretty much worthless nowadays.

Gore photos kind of show a lack of imagination in my opinion. I say bring back the Eaten Back to Life covers if you wanna show some gore...

Eaten Back to life up to Wretched Spawn are fantastic.
Say what you will about the music, but The Wretched Spawn is
amazing.

Well, itīs the samples which bore me, not the music ! But didnīt think of TREBLINKA in at the moment. There are always exceptions to the rule Very Happy
I canīt get enough of wind and rain samples on black metal albums. Itīs probably the same thing to others Very Happy

Real gore pictures just seem unoriginal to me - doesn't leave much to the imagination.

The whole idea of goregrind was interesting to me for about five minutes back when it first started. Carcass is basically the beginning and ending of it for me. Musically I'm not interested at all any more, and the cover art is beyond pointless - all shock, no artistic merit. This is why I prefer death and black metal over grind generally, and painted or drawn covers over stock photos for the same reason. Extreme metal may still have the power to shock, but the good stuff has a guiding artistic vision - it doesn't just arrive in your ears and eyeballs with a splatter of intestines and a spray of blood.

I will say though that I like some of the Cannibal Corpse covers. Even in their over-the-top grossness, they are pretty cool pieces of art - much better than the music on the CD, usually. A few bands have followed in this vein and I'll always have a disgusted chuckle when I see them - followed by a closer look and comments like, "Wow, he really did a good job on that dessicated vagina."
