I think it's tedious crap, with an extremely dubious premise stretched to breaking point.

I gotta say that's the worst article I've ever read in my life...

I'd say it's an editorial. What is the "dubious premise?"

He's comparing one band, and implicitly a subgenre ('Viking Metal', whatever that means) to another genre (indie-rock), claiming that one is ruled by fashion and one isn't. Bullshit.

Thesis: Metal is the new alternative.

Sub-thesis: Metal has more relevance to politics than indie rock.

Support 1: Indie rock is sometimes very lame, its fans lamer.

Support 2: Metalheads do not dress androgynously.

Support 3: I am building my entire argument based on imagery and fashion. Music is irrelevant to what I am saying. I do not actually listen to music. I watch it.

Conclusion: It turns out that I am not capable of writing anything meaningful on this subject. Here is a barnyard analogy to prove it. The vacancy of Amon Amarth's songwriting may have something to do with this all, but I can't be certain.

Yes, Goldenbull, you do need Isten back issues.

I think you're getting the wrong idea. There is no debate here, no argument. There is no counterpoint. It's just a fucking editorial shit talking indie rock. Calm down. And yes goddamn it, I need the back issues. I've been saying that constantly for weeks now.

i'll be the first to say i like a lot of what Amon Amarth does. Their new one rocks.

Whoever said they have "vacant" songwriting...gimme a fuckin' break. I love the bestial black/death metal shit as much as the next guy but how you can listen to that and then say Amon Amarth has no compositional value? oi. Rolling Eyes

EDIT: My bad, Professor Black...were you referring to the author of said article thinking AA's songwriting is vacant?

I was only helping to explain (and not to you personally) why many here find such articles more annoying than interesting. I can understand that the tone of my response may have misled you to believe that I give a flying fuck.

Exactly. The mainstream press usually deals with subcultural topics in a totally ephemeral and uneducated/poorly researched fashion.

I agree to an extent. I don't understand why everyone seems to love Lords Of Chaos (the book). I think it was poorly written and doesn't really talk about the music enough.

Choosing Death was a good read though...

No, I was actually referring to myself. I have never heard much substance in this band's material, and I found them quite boring live. I've not heard or seen them since ca. 2003, though.

Beacuse from a cultural, socio-political viewpoint, which the book was ultimately coming from, the music is secondary. The central tenet of Lords of Chaos was "what provoked & inpsired these musicians to adhere to such ideals and philosophies and the influence it then had".

I thought Choosing Death was Death Metal history for dummies. Not well written, up Earache's ass and not nearly as analytical as it should have been.

Regarding Amon Amarth's music; I've never really been a fan though I like some of their songs. They're the Manowar of Death Metal is many respects and their music is entertaining.
