I think that it's well-made black metal, but nothing more. Definitely not worthy of the hype it recieves.

I must have bad ears, because I never heard much Dissection in Watain. Dissection was far more melodic. I guess they sound similar to those who don't listen to bands that have more than three riffs per song.

As far as them being a gimmick...well maybe you should ask them that personally when they come here in October, . Smile

I quite like them. Their last album took some time to grow on me, but it's getting there. The first two albums were great.

you dont hear any dissection in their last album? i dont want to come off as the kind of person who says something is bad, just because im not into it, but i was curious if anyone else thought these guys were as overratted as i do. no need to get snippy funeral frog.

I'll be seeing them on October 6th in Ottawa. If you guys have any particular requests on what you guys want for merchandise, I can try.

i do see the dissection influence (mainly in their new album) but more than musically i see watain as a continuation of the spirit of dissection.

I think this band is excellent and the last album consistent and brilliant, although at first I didn't like it.

Having had close ties to Dissection and touring with them before recording the last record (hell, Erik handled bass for Dissection's last shows), of course you'll hear a bit of Dissection. But it's only here and there...at least musically. So what? If one was to make a mix tape of both bands, any idiot could clearly hear the difference. Unlike the thousands upon thousands of bands that sound like each other.

To call them a clone as some morons have is foolish and an uneducated opinion. But hell, I'd be rather OK with being called such. Much better than being another "Nuclear War Goat Sodomizing the Virgins" joke that only record collector fetishists and scene queen losers go for.

As to why people like them, well it's simple. They're one of the few who're doing more these days then just talking about nonsense like "fighting christian" or whatever, yet do nothing whatsoever besides put out their shitty limited releases and play boring local gigs for their friends. They're one of the few who capture the same essence as Venom, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, old Mayhem and so on.

Don't mind this band at all.

Liked them before the (perhaps slightly purposeful) change in focus for reaching larger markets ...and like them still after they managed some success in the endeavor.
They are possessed of skillfull abilities and sound professional in the effort.

I'd really like to know why people are so concerned with bands getting bigger, or whatever you wish to call it. Why the need for limitations and put yourself in shackles? Especially if you believe what you do is true art. Why should the fakes get the attention and all that goes along with it?

Phonies like Dimmu Borgir parading around as Black Metal and then hanging out with hollywood celebs, basically dragging the term through the mud and causing it to lose it's meaning...yes, that's annoying to see.

Watain practices what they preach and are far more serious than any delusional scene snob that pretty much does nothing but buy records and pose at shows.

The way I see it, the mainstreaming of "Black Metal" is obviously inevitable. Fucking KFC is mocking it in commercials. I go into Wal-Mart and see what looks like Immortal in a video game. There is a comic book about it. Countless half-assed documentaries. Every hipster on MySpace has "Black Metal" listed under their favorite music. So, if this is the case, then I think it's a band like Watain that should get the attention. Maybe if more morons experienced something like Watain live, they wouldn't call trash like COF or Dimmu, Black Metal anymore and it would drive a knife right people like that.

The 'underground' today is nothing great anyway. It's almost just as much of a mockery as that KFC commercial. With the countless crappy bands, crappy labels, recycling of old releases, MySpace hypocrites, trends, using packaging as a selling point and so on. It's a social club.

I praise this band to death. It seems that many people have a problem with them since they're becoming "hype" or "big" but I think it's a well deserved reward because of their dedicated work and enthusiasm on what they do. Can't think on any other band which stand better than them the spirit of the old true Mayhem and regardless to what many purists out there claim, "Sworn to the dark" is an exercise of pure Metal art at its finest.
