Anyone here who is into her (Yanka) ?
This Forum is so much into underground and obscure stuff.
She is mostly Unknown outside Russia.
Thoughts, Informations or R.I.P.'s ?
The last track of her fantastic album !!!

Never heard of her before just checked out a few songs, very good stuff indeed. Do you have other suggestions for similar stuff in the same time from Russia?(or maybe there has been a thread someone can point me to...)
I have a mild comprehension of Russian, which just interests me more, I've had a hard time finding underground gems from that period though. |

I wonder how many local listeners do understand lyrics, which are not bad at all... _________________ Kiss My Coffin!

Check out Egor i Opizdenevshie:

Side project of Egor Letov of GrOb. Don't think Yanka is involved but it is quite similar to her music. One of my favourite albums. |

I Love this stuff. Got kind of carried away with all Yanka and Egor Letov stuff in the turn of the millenium, I have something like 50 albums in total, mostly cd´s. Inspired by this topic, I went to check out Discogs if I´m missing some stuff (answer was of course yes) and was kind of shocked to see my Стыд И Срам and Не Положено vinyls are that expensive nowadays... not that I´d ever sell them. Ангедония I only have as cd-r copy, so anyone into selling/trading the cd version drop me a line. My favourites are the slow gloomy songs like Домой! (Domoi!), the deadly mix of desperate melancholy and raw production there cannot be matched, not even by the coldest black metal or slowest funeral doom. If there´s Russian music with a similar vibe, recommendations are very welcome. |

Yanka is the best that has happened to Russian music in the last 40 years or so. You must be Russian to really get what this all is about as her songs are closely tied to Russian culture and, more important, to our daily life in the 80s and the beginning of 90s. Having this in mind, I am really surprised that some folks here tend to appreciate it. Nevertheless, if you want a glimpse into a so-called "Russian soul", spirit or national character, then Yanka is the very best you can find. You can have sort of a look at how the things were (and, to a high degree, are) inside.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqrRJecn-NA - this one is called "Anhedonia". In my opinion, this is the most powerful song she ever wrote, it literally radiates suicide (which she comitted the year after this performance).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC5UPY0ykgY - the song is called "Sold Out", a studio recording from her first album, I believe. The chorus goes: "My death is sold out, my shadow is sold out"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMSMr-eWM2U - "Sold Out" live in Novosibirsk on 3d June 1989 with Egor Letov and other parties from the scene of that time. The gig was made in the memory of a guy from "Промышленная Архитектура / Promyshlennaya Arkhitektura" who hanged himself earlier that spring.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2KVWEoWXQE - this one is called "Special Reason". Studio recording with a proper lineup (a rare opportunity at that time and place). Here you can have it all: out-of-time drums, thick bass, Yankas depressive muffled voice.
Ok, I shall stop here, hope the songs above will be of someones interest. I would also advise to read the lyrics which are excellent (actually, people think of her more as of a poet then of a musician, which is true). Some translations can be found here: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/yanka-dyagileva-yanka-dyagileva-lyrics.html _________________ S8nic Fear |

I'm no russian but I had similar thoughts when i first heard her music.
I'm happy that my friend isn't into records anymore, so he just gave me the record ( that one with the beautiful Cat painting) just for recording him it on a CD-R.
Never visited Russia but always have this anticipations you stated. there seems to be a lot of differences between the new russian life and the old traditional ways.
Yeah, she was a great poet also.
"Es war Wind
Donner unter dem Tisch
Es erscheint ein Bett
Ich werde schlafen
Wasser kommt." |
