Where'd you score the Cal Jam vinyl? How's the transfer?

Ordered it from Hells Headbangers Friday and it actually sounds pretty good.

Do labels sell test presses commonly these days and if so, are they usually cheaper or more expensive than the proper release?

depends on the label , i get some for free , some i trade for and some labels sell such as hells headbangers.

Prices can vary also depending on the label , the cost of a test press to make is alot more than the pressing of the regular release , so some labels want outrageous prices , some labels want to trade for rare vinyls.

Seems the common practice is to trade a test press for rare stuff

I remember in the past test-presses always where given away for free (as promo´s for Mag´s or gifts) for they do not have any artwork/lyrics et cetera. I find it strange that test-presses are sometimes even more expensive than the standard releases. Maybe today the limitation is more important than the music and art in general. Today it is all about "possessing" as much "limited and rare stuff" as possible, no matter if it´s total shit or not.

Yeah, test presses are not serving their original purpose at all, in my opinion. They are supposed to show you how the final version of the album will sound, not to be traded by records that are missing in your collection. Most of the times, they are just used by people who want to get stuff for a crappy version (aesthetically speaking, that is) of a record.
But, one does what one wants, I suppose...

Test Presses are interesting, when the Record were changed, like Sadex Magus LP on Kneel before Masters Throne, or when it where not released like Banished LP or Maniac Butchers immortal Death LP on Sombre Rex. Test Presses excisted, Official LP not...

Today? It was all the Time this Way...
Why bothering buying Limited Editions anyway then, when it is false to buy Limited and rare Stuff? Why do you buy these Limited and rare Stuff after all?

I talk about Limited Stuff in general. And i like Test Presses. Mostly they are cheaper than the LP Album and sometimes you get something on LP, what won't come out in this Way / will be never on LP. i have bought / trade Testpresses of several LPs and sometimes i'm wondering how much the People would pay for it, sadly on that stuff i want. Other Side of testpresses is, that Labels like HmSS are throwing out lots of different presses in a total limitation of under 200, so its little insane (but Funny), so you can count nearly the whole edition as Test Field.

I remember also Trading for a Ildjarn Testpress, so if you collect something its always nice to get something you won't have before Wink

For myself i think its ideal for trading for other Test Presses or sending as Bonus or as Gift. Not to make Money with it. But everyone is his own God....
