Definitely a drum machine. And if you ask me, there's one on every KD release after that. Listen to the panning of the toms and the (non) variation of the cymbal hits.

Anyway my pick, since Bathory - Twilight of the Gods was already mentioned...

Samael - Passage

Yes, I agree. Sepultura's 'schizophrenia' also had a ridiculous sound on the toms but it's definitely not a drum machine.

The drums on 'Schizophrenia' sound a lot like the drums on Kreator's 'Pleasure To Kill'. Especially the toms.

when listening to Messe Des Morts EP it seems like Holocausto was playing the drums by his hands.my guess is he had this real cheap synth and was pushing these synth buttons with fingers. you can hear it on toms when he fucks up the rhytm on faster parts. A great sarcofago-ish EP nevertheless.

btw sarcofago-hate cd was real good.

few i used to listen to cybergrind and there was this German band called Intense Soaked Cloth that had a great drummachine sound that sounded really twisted like from out of space.

last profanatica lp aint that bad aswell

oh i forgot big black atomizer lp. proly my fave drummachine album ever.

I quite like the drum sound on Schizophrenia, although the toms are weird sounding. I thought they were rototoms though? I was never very keen on that weird bass drum sound on Arise either!

I'm pretty sure that a electronic drum set is used on I.N.R.I.

Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
Bathory - Twilight Of the Gods

The drums on Master's Hammer - The Jilemnice Occultist sounds programmed. Does anybody know if they are?

I really love this sound, a lot of bass in the toms.

VONDUR

Is there really a way to tell by ear if something is a drum machine VS electronic drums VS triggers? All use digital samples which could sound exactly the same. Even sloppiness/ off time could be programmed if the desired effect was to be "natural" sounding.

It is now common practice on digital recordings to use drum replacer software, ie take the actual performance and replace all the drums with samples via automation, or at least "scoot" samples underneath the actual drum tracks to enhance the sound. Every protools studio has 1000s of drum samples of say $3000 snare drums with perfect tuning which most bands don't have. Perhaps in raw metal more bands are still recording 100% analog but the vast majority of modern recordings use sampled drums.

That's all true. The cymbals will often give it away though.

When we recorded our album the engineer told about some of his experiences... one band´s drummer played so sloppily that he had to replace every kick/bass drum stroke with a sample... by hand!

I am not sure about automation but enhancing the sound with samples is indeed rather common.

I used to abhor triggered drums but it may be useful in live settings (only bass drum, though) and it also strongly depends on the sound used.

To stay on topic:

Catasexual Urge Motivation (looking for both cds actually as my first print copy vanished mysteriously) / Vampyric Motives.
Bleeding for Spermqueen is a killer track!
Insidious Decrepancy as well (even though he should get a real drummer)

Have to listen Eye again, actually like this album very much.... though somehow hard to believe that such big band like Diamond using drum mashine Shocked , but at other hand, who cares.... though somehow more realistic sounds e-kit than drummashine
