Ah my bad! I guess because of their affiliation with Cacophonous that always brought to mind CoF and Bal Sagoth i had them mistaken for an English band

They briefly had an English drummer, but that's as close as the comparison gets. Their earlier black metal stuff doesn't really do a great deal for me, but the Ark of Thought, the self titled album and Mournument have some great moments, despite the slightly embarrassing gothic aesthetic on the earlier ones.

I again think that "The Weeping of A Thousand Years" is one of the better albums when it comes to combining BM and a gothic aesthetic.

It's actually the only one I'm missing - I'll check it out! I'm not trying to say that the actual music was bad in the gothic period, just the band photos! Wink

Reign of Erebusīs Humanracist is a great album!
Harsch stuff like early Dark Funeral and Niden Div. 187. Just not from the 90īs.

Totally. Still is, bar White Medal and whatever comes out via King Penda.

And if late 90's = second wave (as seems to be the case in this thread), then Meads of Asphodel belong up there as the pinnacle. Quintessentially British and not sounding like a derivative of some other country's scene.

I remember making a thread a while back about UK BM, and there was a couple of cool things I'd overlooked. A half-decent band from Plymouth being a surprise.

UK black metal is the worst shit imaginable, with the exception of some newer bands. I never understood how a part of the world that gave us Sabbath and Venom could bomb so miserably when it came to later black metal stuff.

The new Meads is excellent. One of my favorites of the past year.

Unhailed brilliance, but I was under the impression this was more about "melancholic vampire black metal" than real cult?

I have that album with the... misty... arc thingie in it. Listened to it once or twice years ago and forgot the damn thing exists. I wonder how it sounds today even if I can't be arsed to find out. Their demo was recently posted on Asmodian Coven if anyone is interested.

Notice that I said arsed.

We're better at doom and death?

I've always dismissed the Meads...seemed kind of goofy ( and not in an endearing way) to me. Also that "split" they did with Mayhem, put out by Supernal, put me off, as well as many of the other..er.. ' uk black metal' acts supernal used to promote years ago...
