A buddy and I were having a conversation over both of these bands and who had a bigger impact on who. Obviously both bands are crucial in the role of hard rock and heavy metal. Personally Sabbath did it for me, once I heard Master of Reality when I was 12 I was totally sold with their sound.

Yes I know everyone is gonna say "actually THIS band did it for me.. I never liked Sabbath or Zeppelin" ... But for those who were impacted by one of these.. who was it and why?

Black Sabbath were always around and I just thought of them as forefathers but never listened to them until around 1992 when I got Paranoid on Cd from Columbia House record club. I was pretty much addicted to Sabbath after getting We Sold Our Souls next. After that i was set on getting everything Sabbath.

Led Zeppelin still just a band I'll listen to it its on but never seek it out. I love some songs.

Impossible to answer. Both were gods for different reasons, Sabbath brought up the darkness & gloom,
Zeppelin created some of the first hymnic/epic songs whose patterns were adapted by metal bands in the 80s.
LZ were different in that they were a very diverse group and the heavy songs were just one of the several aspects of their music.

I listen to Sabbath more nowadays but LZ had the bigger impact on me at a young age.

Same. My mom playing Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith was the first time I experienced loud rock'n'roll. Trying to catch Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica on the radio came quite a bit later.

Love both equally but for different reasons.

Sabbath for the riffs: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vRMG1YxDjsU
Zeppelin for the epicness: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wL-PnRAgLK0

I found "We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll" and "Paranoid" tapes amongst my mom's collection when I was maybe 10-12. Definitely life changing. Zeppelin is ok but they were always more of a band that I'd just hear on the radio, didn't move me as much for sure.

When I was a kid up through to my mid 20's I was big into LZ but it faded away, Black Sabbath is more interesting and inventive I think (I always liked Sabbath but more so now), it's darker and has a utilitarian working class feel, I like Motorhead for the same reasons.

Sabbath had a bigger impact on me than 95% of the bands I listen to. I can't stand Led Zeppelin.
