False. I don't care for anything this band has done after "Still Life", but he's got a great death metal voice. The only negative I can say about it is that it's too recognizable. Kind of like how it's hard to view a character being played by say, Al Pacino, as anyone but Al Pacino.

Opeth surely went downhill since they got involved with Steven Wilson, but Orchid and Morningrise are awesome albums. Judging Opeth only by later albums is like judging Burzum after Hvis lyset tar oss-material.

Orchid and Morningrise were decent albums, but somewhere around My Arms Your Hearse, they really lost it for me.

Opeth is boring crap since day one. I bought the hype about this band back then, when they got rave reviews in the zines and everyone talked about this special new group. I thought it would be another great Gothenburg band but the debut was an utter disappointment, their compositions just don't go anywhere. It collected dust for a few years before i ditched it during a cleansing of superfluous stuff from my collection.

I believe i saw them live once, maybe with Cradle Of Filth, can't remember. What a snoozefest, This is a typical band for making such statements. Same types as a band like Paradise Lost, who look with disdain towards their older work and have stupid quotes once a while about metal and it's "closeminded" fans. . Tiamat,Samael,Amorphis,Sentenced,The Gathering,so many that turned their back on the old material. I'm glad then, that i'm a closeminded metal fan. I wouldn't want to live with stuff from the above mentioned bands and the legion of others that mellowed down and got all pretentious. No fun at all with that music.

Bloodbath is a C band too. Boring,"nice" sounding deathmetal by the books. Devoid of any atmosphere, hooks or catchy stuff like the late eighties/early nineties outfits could produce.

I like some Opeth (the "Damnation" LP) but his statements are stupid: what he does expect?
Could have AC/DC, Saxon, Slayer or Motorhead, to change their style to "progress" ???

If I want to hear other stuff, I'll listen to other stuff - I'm fed with "open minded" metal bands who suffer from inferiority complex, and try to incorporate "other" elements in their music, just to appear more "intellectual" and be acceptable by the serious "indie" world (like Tool, Meshugga and other boring bands) - and look what happened to Metallica Laughing

Lately, with the "vintage/occult" movement, things are more funny: the Heavy Metal world try to absorb the past of the "hippy/psychedelic/prog 60's/70's" movement into it (see "Rise Above" label as an example) and the newer bands make simplistic songs, in order to appear "vintage" Laughing
I'll tell you what, music in the 70's wasn't "simple", you know?

Bands like Devil's Blood, are for younger people - who older guy want to hear the same fucking chord structures again?
For Goat's sake, all these things have being done better in the past!

I want my Metal to be METAL - classic and stubborn. Only VoiVod and Celtic Frost did the "evolution" thing well - and about Celtic Frost, for me they were great up to "Into the Pandemonium" - then they went shit and recovered with "Monotheist".

Also, what with that statement?

"I admire some bands that do the same record over and over again – I wonder how they don’t get bored! "

he is not forced to buy every album from AC/DC, for example: he could easily stuck with their classics (as I do) and leave the contemporary "boring" albums for their fans - doesn't he know how the music industry works?
Yes, some bands have to make "the same" album every time, in order to please their fans and stay on the road - that's a fact.

And O.K., we 'll see how fresh will be the albums that he will make in few years - genuine inspiration doesn't last long......

Seriously how do they not get bored, playing the same songs over and over and over again.... I love music and I can play any of my thousands of LPs, CDs and tapes when I need fresh new sounds, but all these bands, doing the same thing over and over, how do they not get bored and branch out? I really don't understand this element of music, all these bands doing the same thing over and over and over again.... I mean I get how Motorhead and AC/DC do it, because they get paid well, but the bands that don't make any money??!?!

Number me one of these hipster elitists who like change, branching out and pushing things forward.... even if it sucks like with many bands, it's not complacent.... throw a fuckin' sitar or sax or harsh noise bit in wherever you want.....

Also: being exclusively into "outsider" music like metal or liking a diversity of metal sub-genres does not make one "open minded" nor does liking "metal... and some classical" or being into neo-folk.....

What can I say? I guess my palette is more open than most of the metalheads - I can blast into Morbosidad, Teitanblood or Revenge, and the next moment I can chill with some John Coltrane or Nat King Cole, or just drifting away with some Van Der Graaf Generator...

My point is that every kind of music has it's own world, and you can take one piece of each music, and try to appreciate in it's own terms- if it suits you, then stay - if its not, happily there's a lot of music out there.

Maybe it's just me Razz and my age (during my 40's) but I can't enjoy the music of the newer generations, who sometimes make complex stuff for the sake of it - and it's not that I can't stand complex music: Alan Holdsworth is God, but there can't be many like him ! Wink

Yes. This has been going on and I wish it would stop.
