a friend of mine who is a sick, virtuoso trumpet player who does mostly free jazz stuff asked me flat-out "Metal bands with most insane, unhinged guitar soloing. Go."

i never really thought about this. sitting here trying to think of specific examples is kind of hard, since there's so much fucked up guitar playing in extreme metal. i'm not sure i can really say, "XXXXX is the most fucked up".

the thing that comes to mind is krisiun's "black force domain" in terms of being loud, aggressive, fast, chaotic and almost on the verge of disaster.

please let me know what you think is the most "fucked up" guitar playing . . .

Maybe not extreme enough, but I remember when I hear this first time and was like wtf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM9rvusjr9Q

This album is not that good music-wise, but later he has done awesome non-instrumental stuff.

Just about any of Trey's solos in Morbid Angel.

at the risk of sounding pedestrian, other than krisiun, i did recommend trey as well as "obscura".

DRI - dirty rotten LP is full of totally insane short solos that pop in and out
though not sure if you consider this "metal" at this point in their career

i guess the soloing on deicide's "legion" were the things i heard in the early '90s that sold me on death metal . . .

Well for "fucked up" guitar playing Lust is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Nocturnal Fear has some pretty sick solos too.

the trumpet player is peter evans. he's a fan of mick and knows his stuff. i'm trying to find a good clip of peter playing . . . he's a total shredder. oddly, i don't think he and mick have ever played together. i might have to get on this. it has crossed my mind in the past.

Incubus' God Died On His Knees has some really wild solos.

I would also mention SVEST's Urfaust (the first track) if it didn't take about ten listens to even be able to properly decipher it. It's definitely one of the most crazed, punishing solos I've heard.

Edit: To further the case for SVEST, the thing goes on for about 3 minutes.
