Any thoughts on his music? I used to think that he was all about the guitar acrobatics, but his early albums have a lot of merit to them. Trilogy is my favorite album of his solo discography. Mark Boals had a really killer voice on that album. I can tolerate this guy's playing up until Magnum Opus or Facing the Animal. After that, it's pretty much either meh or absolute shit.

Also, his involvements in Steeler and Alcatrazz were respectable. I dig that kind of stuff.

Wanky guitar is fine by me as long as the wankery isn't more important than the music itself or sounds out of place. Early Malmsteen balances it well I think. It's funny you run a J Metal forum because it was years of listening to Japanese punk and eventually metal that led me to finally checking him out.

Many, many years ago I was introduced to this guy through one of those 'Hard n Heavy' VHS tapes. I remember thinking who the fuck is this cunt?? Hated him ever since.

I think so, as well. I needed to find the right middle ground before deciding to listen to Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Japan really loves the guy, as well as Ritchie Blackmore. Speaking of Blackmore, Odyssey is a pretty good album that features Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. That was also my first Malmsteen album. People make it all about "Heaven Tonight", but "Rising Force" and "Riot in the Dungeons" are way better.

You know, for all of the talk about him being all about the technicality, he's still far more authentic than most other guitarists in that league. He certainly proved it in the beginning. It's around the mid-1990s or so when he just lost every bit of memorability that he'd retained up until then.

I really never check out Malmsteen tbh but this thread reminds me to throw on Windham Hell. I wonder if it holds up?

Always loved his early stuff, still go to see him from time to time if he comes around. Half amazing, half comedy. Kinda like the "fat Elvis" era of the King.

Favorite stuff of his is the demo stuff and the live at Wolfgangs in 83' bootleg on an off night when Alcatrazz cancelled and he ended up jamming with Anvil Chorus as his back up band.

That Yngwie with symphony album is also pretty killer.

One of his old demos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaNcIuY_BCI

Live at Wolfgangs plus some demo track can be found here too.

The first two albums are excellent, especially Marching Out. SO many great songs on that album. The rest is crap IMO, though Trilogy has a few worthy moments.

Marching Out is also right up there for me, just second to Trilogy.
