I've always found myself on shaky ground with this band. I haven't heard the last two, but Carved... sometimes sounds excellent to me, and other times bores me to death. I couldn't honestly give an opinion on it, as I really don't know what to think. I would dare to suggest that the last Anael album did this kind of style of BM a lot better.

First record is great with the strange sound. Side A) of Carved... is killer but the others don't do much for me.

Live they were great in the past with s fantastic guitar sound.

The first Secrets of the Moon album is the deal. I also am totally impressed by the bonus tracks on a reissue, especially by the track "Leichengott". I recommend to check out the predecessor of SOTM, Martyrium. Great occult BM with a lot of Death Metal influences. If their album "L.V.X. Occulta" will ever be re-released on vinyl someday I'll go nuts!

I've only heard and got 'Antithesis', which has some good moments, but also some quite boring moments..

Maybe I should check out their earlier material..

I think they're probably the best example of technical proficiency/good production/cool aesthetics not meaning jack shit if you can't write a decent song.

This is actually a pretty cool band with some good tunes. The last few albums are awesome.
Actually the whole discography is not too bad at all.

Seems to be one of those bands not talked about a lot that is actually really talented, like Dark Fortress as well. (Well if you like really clean and atmospheric keyboard infused black metal that is not blatantly over the top circus styled lunacy like Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir who are too much... bands like Secrets of the Moon are just more classy)

I think Secrets of the Moon are absolutely grandiose, really great stuff. Love their last three albums the most. But I wouldn't expect this band to receive too much praise on these forums. I guess they have more of a clean/polished sound, but it fits their music well.

You can also put Grabnebelfürsten or Nocte Obducta in this category, but then you are already straight sailing to the seas of faggotry, because then its not a wide trip to Agathegaymon & co.

There are a lot of such bands now, it evolved like a foul branch, especially in Bavaria. Don't ask me for recommendations, but they have names like Agrypnie or Thränenkind, which should be promising enough to further examination for any lover of true shite.

People who like those bands should check out Fäulnis too.

Check out Lunar Aurora! Secrets of the Moon did a split with them but that one is rather hard to find.

Most German "avantgarde" bands totally suck, like the fags Thränenkind.

Lunar Aurora are great and although they somehow often get praised by the same common "fan-base", they are miles above SOTM and in a completely different league, IMHO.

Same goes for Nagelfar (and all related projects).

Lumping SOTM and Dark Fortress in the same box as Agathodaimon, Thränenkind and other assorted riff-raff would be a bit harsh, just saying.
