I have owned their first two albums for about a decade and never really got my head around either one. Dusted off both the other night to give them a decent chance. Not very impressed. What do people find so good about this quite highly regarded band?

Well, these days they sound complitely different than in their old works and of course it's not a surprise as there's no original members left. Their current "success" is more because of their latest albums than what they did in the beginning, so maybe you should check their last two full-lenghts too.

especially their last two records are kinda high-end-BM when it comes to aesthetics and production quality. mid paced tunes, often too lengthy in their duration, dark atmo, always on the edge between "monumantal" and "sheer boredom". you have to check it out for yourself.

I think the "later" material peaked with Antithesis. It's the last album with Daevas as well.

they started to suck right after unearthed arcana, which is plain brilliant and has for sure stood the test of time.

unfortunately only one interlude & full track on youtube:

UA is a perfect example of atmospheric interludes setting the mood for the rawer metal tracks.

all their later stuff is shit.

Those first 2 albums never did anything for me, so i sold them.

Antithesis and Privilegivm i found were pretty damn good. Some great midpaced riffs in there.

Seven Bells was bland, boring, inoffensive and gay. Sold that too.

Lullaby bm. And 0 original members btw.

I have Carved in Stigmata Wounds and really felt I "should" like it, but I never ever find myself wanting to listen to it. Same exact feeling I have toward Nightbringer and later Negura Bunget, actually. It seems really cool at times, but it must not be too impressive- because unless someone else puts it on, I'm never ever going to listen to it.

I haven't listened to their early stuff, but their later albums are some of the most dull black metal I've ever heard.

I really appreciate "Stronghold...". The riffs ainīt original but I like the rumbling sound of the drums and the partly hypnotic songs (esp. "Asleep" and the "outro" of the last song).
Cannot remember their efforts on their latest records but Iīd assume that this release is more diverse.

PS: Donīt know whether they were aware of but the intro in the last song was actually similar to sounds scientists recorded from other plantesī environment. I think this gives this part another dimension.
