Maybe even strangest than laser vinyl player:

Mitsubishi Z-20
- automatic vinyl player (auto select size and rpm's, auto start and end)
- autoamtic double tape player (3 engies, 2 microphones)
- place for 4 tapes under player (wtf?)
- radio
- up to 4 speakers 2 x 20 W
- equalizer

Back 1984 to 1986 era there were a few Japanese Stereo mnaufacturers that had Record Players that were upright like the one in your picture and were linear tracking.... one would play both sides of the record without turning it over (it had 2 tonearms/needles-one on each side...
The very first CD players were also set up like that...there was no drawer-you put the CD upright kinda like putting a cassette into a tape deck...

My personal Turntable is a TECHNICS linear tracking unit with a laser that "reads" the gaps between songs when you put the vinyl in, and it lets you program it...
for example: you can play song 2, then song 4, then 1, then 5 twice, etc...

When I bought it new (a long, long time ago) it was the top of the line "Consumer" turntable available by any maker...
It was $500 +/- in 1985... (so add 23 years of inflation to that price)

Apparently there is some kind of an after-market for them still today, even though they are no longer made...
when I was "googling" for a picture, I found a couple of web sites selling them...
but one was in Japanese & one was in some Scandanavian language so I cannot tell you what they said...I guess there is a little cult going about them...

Is the tonearm in the lid, or does the lazer 'read' the grooves too? I love these crazy turntables...

This is pure audiophile cult SME 30 turnatble with SME V Series Arm dubbed "The Best Pick Up Tonearm in The World" Not most extreme in design like Kuzma or Transrotor Reference models, but still aesthetic terror on oil damped suspension towers at its best.
Below is another Cult Table from VPI Industries - HRX, vinyl maniac's wet dream.

If you look carefully, you can see the tonearm in the lid. Lovely!

That player on the first pictures looks special for sure... how did these perform? Using lasers for records sounds interesting.
If I remember correctly, a similar procedure was/is also used to save the audio information from some very very old shellac records whicvh would be destroyed if played conventionally - I think I read about it on the National Geographic site one or two years ago.

The tonearm is in the lid & the laser is next to it...
the laser automatically scans the record when the lid is first closed, and it reads the gaps btween the songs for programming purposes...
but the tonearm has a conventional stylus in it....
kinda cool, although it's not something I use everytime I listen to a record...
