That is both right and wrong.
Someone who buys or looks at records regularly in shops and the internet wouldn't, but a person who rarely shops and is too busy working, and has an uncontrollable urge to hear his favourite record again will pay almost anything.

I used to do that.
Was working 12 hour shifts a lot and would just order through HMV and pay ridiculous amounts for CD's, just so i wouldn't have to travel far and spend any more time looking and wanting something very badly.

Shops that over price are maybe counting on the few that either don't know, or don't care, what they should really be paying ? Yes ?

VINTAGE VINYL near Newark, NJ... for the USA the most massive metal section I've ever seen, easily takes an hour or more to rapidly flip from A-Z...and that is just the cds....then the other half of the store has the LPS... you won't get out of there without blowing at least $100 and I've seen some folks drop $500...and i've been there twice in my life...

This. I have never seen a bigger or better metal selection anywhere else.

We sell $25 Metallica reissues like candy. They look and sound good, so plenty of people will buy them rather than cross their fingers and wait for a mint copy to turn up (Metallica records are almost always partied on).

Amoeba SF is great, much better than LA IMO.

The shot of Rough Trade East they have there is pretty out of date, I work just by it (new one), huge and very nice looking (with hipster cafe included of course) but so incredibly overpriced. The metal section is dominated by Back On Black represses selling for £30-£45 (35-52euros/$50-$70) and there's not a great selection otherwise. Other genres failed to have anything that grabbed my attention also, and if anything did it was at a price I wasn't prepared to part with. Unfortunately its very much a place that people seem to buy from so they can say they shopped there or get the "ROUGH TRADE" tote bag to sport around in this very Berlinesque part of town. Shame! Coulda been good!

Ive bought records for more than they're worth (sometimes, stupidly - a LOT more) because I don't have the patience to wait around two years to maybe find one for €20-€30 cheaper. Course, I usually feel like someone kicked me in the balls when I do see one for sale at a substantially lower price, but that's the game. Have had more than my fair share of "wins" over the years too...so need to take the good with the bad. That being said, I limit myself to mesely amount €150 a month of records - blow it all on one or not, depending on whats there. some of my mates spend three or four times that a month!

Yes, its understandable to do that if its something thats OOP or just generally not in abundance, we've all done that, but these are new releases selling for 1/3 more, sometimes twice the amount the label is selling it for.

How is Paul? Not been in contact with him since Heidenwut Productions' early days. Would love to visit that store one day.

Anyone been to both Vintage Vinyl and Armageddon? Wondering if they have a bigger selection, might be worth the 3 hour trip to NJ.

I bought a few items at Aquarious SF. Honestly, I think that AMoeba or Rasputin (if it's still there) were better stores, in SF I mean.
Even if the managers at Amoeba SF are really dumb, Steve is awesome though.

The only truly "breathtaking" record store I've been in is Extreme Noise (Minneapolis) when the crusties stop by on tour or after having jumped off a train.
