I love living here but there is nothing metal about Santa Cruz. And it's fucking expensive.

Check out Oakland, good music scene, relatively cheap, slutty women... yeah the crime is kind of shitty and if you are scared of black or Latino people you could have trouble, but I think it's a cool town. Better than SF.

To live in Oakland you need to have some major(black)balls.
cant be no worse than detroit or downtown baltimore..hahaha

My advice:

Stick to the Bay Area if you really feel the need to move to CA. I'm from Los Angeles, and this city is kind of a fucked up mess. There's little to recommend here in terms of 'metal culture'. We get decent shows once in a while, but so does every other major city on the West Coast.

Los Angeles is also unusually ugly and polluted compared to other West Coast cities. It's a total fucking eyesore, and the culture generally comes in two flavors: Mexican/cholo on one hand, and pompous white yuppie hack on the other.

All exaggeration and simplification aside - there are good things about this city, but it's not worth putting up with all of the bullshit.

This is true but Oakland and SF aren't much better in terms of pompous leftist rich folks. We call them Bay Aryans. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2001/09/17/1043311.php

Well, since I've lived in Southern CA most of my life I guess I would have the right to say a few things. You could try moving to/or visiting Long Beach, but be aware Long Beach is quite large and there are some shitty areas, but if you go by the coast near Belmont Shore, it gets better. There have been legendary shows in LB, Slayer, Judas Priest...my best friend saw Trouble play on the beach in the 80's. Rarely do I ever see metalheads....interestingly in the 90's I saw tons of metalheads at Disneyland haha, not sure how it is today. Well, you could just look around and ask the local populace questions. The world is a giant shithole, so it looks like intelligent people will just have to find the tolerable places to live. I'm thinking of moving to South Dakota, but that's a whole other subject.

At the moment I'm living in a city called Bellflower, and it's kind of in the middle of everything, the neighborhood is low key and not much going on, but that's kind of how I like it. Not too many whites, a lot of hispanics and blacks. Many areas around here used to be mainly white areas, but I'm sure you know about the "white flight" issue, just watch, in some years the world will be made up mostly of muslims, blacks and mexicans. Anyway I guess that's another subject too. Good luck.

Recently took a two week vacation there. Drove from Arcata to LA. It was incredible in the north, and I would move there in a second.

But there is not a single decent Metal record store in California. The one in San Francisco had been shut down years ago. I stopped into Amoeba to see a very unimpressive selection of nothing. Some lame Watain shirts.

I was looking forward to stopping at Dark Realm and I began calling there days before we reached LA, and didn't get an answer. On our last day there while I was debating on whether to drive there, Bay actually called back to say the city was giving them shit, and they were temporarily closed. I couldn't believe it.

How the fuck can New Jersey have better record stores than California?

NWN needs to open a fucking shop somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You gave me an excuse to air that grievance here, thanks.

I went to both SF and LA with work recently and I prefered LA if i'm honest SF seemed to be full of hipsters. I remember feeling judged in a record store.

I recently spent a week's vacation in San Francisco. Had a great time walking around the city.

One memorable moment was a bum's sign at Fishermans Wharf: "Pregnant and Horny?"

Trust me, LA is also full of hipsters. It's just not quite as obvious as it is in SF. Jim Goad wasn't totally off with that Bay-Aryans thing posted above, and LA hipsters might be a little less self-congratulatory about their status as ivory tower dwellers, but they're here too. Silverlake, Hollywood, etc.

I think someone mentioned Santa Cruz earlier in the thread somewhere. It's hip in a college-town-full-of-hippies way, and there's nothing metal-related of note in the area, but it's a genuinely nice place to live. You also have relatively easy access to SF/Oakland for shows and that kind of thing.

Oh yeah, LA definitely has its hipsters. I went to "Power of the Riff" a couple years ago to see Pentagram, and the place was FULL of hipster. Seriously felt like my girl and I were the only 'metalheads' there..

Cities with more than 300.000 habitants should be illegal.

Sooner or later they inevitably turn either into shitholes or trenchs of jewish owners of the land/money which make more and more expensive to live normally as humans truly deserve. Also supporting the creation of sub-humanity in the perypheries, a thing which is obviusly secretly welcomed by the system, so they can have (more) sheep by the powers that be.

If you are people of money everything is easier, still. But beyond your horizon of security lies a decadence that, in some way or another, will end reaching you.
