I'm addicted to side A of this killer prog rock classic. What other prog rock albums are like this? I'm looking for stuff with heavy keyboard use and good atmosphere.

Haven't listened to Tarkus in forever, but bands like Kansas, Yes, Camel etc certainly played the same style of prog. Check Yes-Relayer for its general weirdness, Kansas around Leftoverture era, Camel - Mirage etc. They may be lighter on the keyboards but I associate them as similar styles.

Kansas+Yes both put out a lot of albums with utterly manic tunes.

It's the fucking best half of a record ever! One of my favorites. I'd suggest, if you haven't already:

1st 3 Gentle Giant LPs. A little less epic and more quirky, but we'll worth your time.

Yes - Yes Album through to Relayer. Essential.

Le Orme: the one with the sexy blue chick on the cover.

Prematia Forneria Marconi - StorIan Un Minutio (or something like that)

Van Der Graaf Generator - H to He, Pawn Hearts, Least We Can Do, Godbluff..... These are darker and less ffantasy based, but really good.

Genesis - Trespass and Nursery Cryme have a ton of mellotron going on.

These are really basic prog, I'll list a few more after I get home, my brain is FUCKED after my shift.... I mean no one sounds like ELP except ELP, these are just similar.

I also suggest the BBC Prog Brittannia documentary, well worth your time.....

And King Crimson for the Greg Lake connection, although not much they did sounded all that close to Tarkus.

samples

Kansas - Magnum Opus (off Leftoverture, gets more awesome as it plays)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sJI9RDIJn4

Yes - Sound Chaser (off Relayer)

Less like Tarkus than I remembered, but they certainly rule + have killer atmosphere.

Tarkus side A is killer !

I second the Camel recommendation. Maybe not as epic as Tarkus but still pretty solid. Mirage is a great album.

I also suggest looking into the "Prog is not a four letter word" compilation for the bestial underground of progressive rock.

Maybe Black Bonzo for a newer band with prog heritage and lots of keyboards. All three of their albums are great.

Thanks. I'll hit Amoeba and see if I can find some of those for cheap.

This! I back Camel- Mirage hard

Another potential suggestion in this vein (another passport release too if I'm not mistaken) Nektar- A Tab in the Ocean

You guys probably know it, but Camel has another good one called 'The Snow Goose.' You'll like it if you like Mirage. I've never heard anything else they did.

^^snow goose isn't bad either, but Mirage is the tip of the iceberg for me in terms of Camel. May as well recommend their first S/T album in the same breath as well

Seems like the passport label had a lot of great acts in this vein in their prime, though perhaps elitists would disagree. I guess Camel might be considered a common act, though maybe not quite Yes common. Still a favorite of mine regardless of outside opinion
