Looking for albums that sound similar to Spheres, Focus, or old Atheist. Prefer bands that are from that era.

I am reading "similar to" in a broad light.

I would be sure to check out Obliveon From This Day Forward and as a corollary, Dead Brain Cells Universe. I am assuming your familiarity with Voivod.

I'd be remiss to not mention Nocturnus.

Then perhaps Sadist from Italy.

Thanks, I'm familiar with all those bands. Was thinking of stuff that's a bit more "obscure" I guess or bands that were under the radar at that time that were going for that sound.

Problem is, for this level of playing you have to be really really fucking good so there's not as much by the way of obscurities that are all that memorable. Like Seiges Even and a bunch of the other stuff I didn't know until I read Mean Deviation never really clicked with me for various reasons. But that's the fucking book to buy if you want obscurities, that book absolutely shreds!!

I know you said "from the same era but I'm just going to ignore it Twisted Evil

Obscura are by and large my favorite of this genre - Thessling is such a fucking insane bass player and Meunzer is legitimately incredible, not just tech wank. His solo album rules too, you can buy it from him direct and it's totally ridiculous!

Beyond Creation's debut is a real shredder. The vocals are the only thing really lacking in this band but they're not even bad, just not memorable. So much shredding!!

Decrepit Birth's last few records have been real killers. I hope they keep this new dude playing bass for them, he rules!!

I've been really into Blotted Science from the youtube links I've checked out, but never bought an album from them. Sounds rad.

Plus my obligatory fusion picks of total funk insanity Twisted Evil
Believe It - The NEW Tony Williams Lifetime
Thrust, Man-Child, Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock
Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy - Return to Forever
Inside Out/Realization - Eddie Henderson
On the Corner/Bitches Brew/In a Silent Way/Live-Evil/Jack Johnson - Miles
Stanley Clarke - Stanley Clarke

This shit will fuck you up mate!!

this is quite good:

Illuminati - The Core (they also feature members of atheist, gorguts, nocturnus)

otherwise from that era check out:

Algophobia - s/t 1997
Aspid - Extravasation
Creepmime - Chiaroscuro 1995 (maybe also their debut Shadows)
Violent Dirge - Craving 1995

I think a lot of the bands mentioned so far have radically different sounds. Are you looking generally for 'progressive(ish)' death metal with a certain slant, or more narrowly for what some people call 'fusion' death metal?

The latter is hard for me to pin down good examples of. Do you like that band Aghora? It is not dm, but is more or less in the 'fusion' park. I think one of the Cynic dudes was in it.

I dunno, maybe Spiral Architect/Twisted Into Form? Spastic Ink? Unless you are looking for tech death metal bands exclusively
