NYC has nothing you can't get online for much cheaper.

Generation does indeed have a good selection of Metal. But like I said, you're not going to find anything you can't obtain through mail order for much cheaper. But if you like the feeling of being able to go to a record store and buy music, then I guess it's worth going.

Not far from Generation is over-rated, lived-out-his-legend Bleeker Bob. Small selection of Metal CDs, but you may find some interesting stuff there.

I have not purchased music from a "brick and mortar" establishhment in 5 years.

Online shopping is cheaper and also u get 100 million times the selection of a traditional record store.

Generation is okay. Some good pubs nearby also. Wouldnt waste your time on Bleeker Bobs. Place has gone downhill significantly.

It seems like Hospital Productions in lower manhattan might have some death metal, but they're more privy to black metal and noise...

I also found this to be the case. I guess in the internet age a used record store isn't going to put out anything that they couldn't just move easier on ebay or the like. I might be in NY in may as well so I will give it another shot.

You just have to be more persistent/patient and look harder to find the hidden gems.

Generation records is OK. Before online mailorders I used to get most of my music there but now it is easier to just order stuff online. They do have a good used CD section where I have found some awesome stuff and they also have a good selection of metal shirts and hoodies for reasonable prices. Bleeker Bobs is pretty bad now I think the guy who stocked the good metal titles doesn't work there anymore.

Yes, it's truly is more of a "hunt" in NYC record shops. Sometimes all of the stores mentioned have one or two interesting things, but only once in a while do you find anything for a bargain price. Still, it's fun to browse through stacks anyway.

I've had the best luck at Hospital because most of their customers aren't into DM or thrash or anything like that, so anything they have used in those genres is very cheap compared to $15-$25 black metal and noise cds they normally stock. Plus they have a pretty good used vinyl turnover. Lastly, you can't beat having a wall of tapes in a store these days.

I'm in NYC right now. As far as record stores go for extreme metal is Generation Records really still the only real option? I see the Hospital Productions store closed.
