Was researching some shipping prices for US domestic shipping and it's hard to believe it's so cheap, like $5 for a record, and maybe $7-8 for 4-5 records.
I mean compared to Canada Post... which is a fucking horror show.

Is it really that cheap? Or am I missing something?

It's usually never much more than $5 for a box full of records and around $8 for a single cassette from Canada. It's not really hard to grasp why we're so unwilling to buy a lot internationally.

Yeah, the actual shipping for me for one record (including tracking) is $3 and change. The boxes I use are about $1.40, so the total would probably be around $5. I charge $4 for a single LP and $.50 for each LP after.

It is that cheap, but on the other hand the USPS is going bankrupt. Not sure if they really know how to run a business.

I'm not an expert but I think their bankruptcy is more about recent legislation requiring absurd and unnecessary pention payouts than their actual business model. I hope they keep afloat, FedEx sucks.

Private shipping companies are basically paying Congress to force the USPS into bankruptcy. I can't wait to see what happens to shipping costs when that finally happens.

Until recently though USPS was one of the best and most efficiently run government programs in America.

Correct. It's been discussed on here many times, but this article sums it up, Jameswolfe :

Also, even though it's technically a government institution, it hasn't received a dime of tax payer money since the early 1980's. It was very profitable until the 2006 legislation.

a little over $3. Its common for ebay/discogs sellers to charge $4 or $5 though to cover fees, and i'm sure things like mailers they might account for.

According to the linked article, the PO is suppose to fund future pensions with $5.5 Billion every year but in 2012, the PO lost $16 Billion... I suck at math but it seems like they have more than just that one problem.

Media mail is cheap because it's for libraries so there is a discount in the price. That's what I remember a clerk telling me when it first began. I think it was 4th Class before that?

Its exactly $3.88 if you do it right with USPS tracking. I forget exactly how many albums you can ship in there before the price jumps, but its not much. I think I shipped close to 10 records all double boxed for around $6 maybe? Media mail is the shit for sure, just gotta play by the rules and not slip in extras that are not directly related to an LP/CD/cassette
