Everyone and their grandma seem to rave about Mortuary Drape (rightfully so...), but I've hardly ever heard anyone mention early Maldoror. I've been searching for information about their Ars Magika album on the webs, but I couldn't find a single review. Any fans/people in the know who could provide me with some information on them?

Maldoror are times better than Mortuary Drape in my opinion, speaking in terms of black metal and occultism. One of the best band Italy has ever seen for sure.
The Drape has become a cult more because of their age than their musical relevance, although Secret Sudaria is a very strong release, imo.

I'v never followed TMK but anyhow the original Maldoror lineup crumbled short after Ars Magika as they wanted to experiment and dare, the reason because In Saturn Mystique is strongly influenced by some kind of electronic music. Old members as far as I know are no longer involved in any musical project, or at least nothing worth to be known, also becuase they are more or less close to 40 nowadays

I've been looking for this album for years now but I've never been able to find it ; I only have the "In Saturn Mystique" CD, a not-so-bad album but a bit "weird" for my personal tastes.

I wouldn't say they are better than the Drape, but they do share some similarities. Maldoror is a wee bit more symphonic which some people might dislike. Anyway, I was real happy to score a mint copy of the Ars Magika CD as it's ridiculously rare. Took me about 3 years just to find a copy for sale.

Here's a couple of tracks from Ars Magika:

I was somewhat curious about this album years ago but I guess I just let it go because I still don't have it. Oh well, that has happened more than once.

I think you might like it. It's very much in line with a lot of the stuff we talked about in the 3rd wave Black Metal thread.

Didn't they all go industrial infected when they became Thee Maldoror Kollective, somewhat similar to Aborym?
I seem to recall having had the first TMK album. It was not good enough to keep apparently as I don't have it now.

I don't think I ever heard the first Madoror album but I did have a cd-r of the second one from some cd-r trading 15yrs ago. Isn't there a lot of latin speaking in the first song or am I thinking of something else???

Guess some youtube or downloading will resolve that inquiry. Wink

I think they did. Ars Magika is the only album I've heard to be honest. Thought the later stuff looked pretty lame. Could be wrong though.

Debut was lame and I never bothered to check anything else.

But if you had some kind of musical knowledge you would say for sure that Maldoror are times more well constructed and refined than MD13, just musically speaking. It's totally undeniable.
Moreover, if you had some knowledge of occultism and Crowley-related stuff, you would agree also on the lyrical/ideological part of my sentence.

Go on man, go on!

The comparison between Maldoror and Mortuary Drape makes no sense. Sure, they're both Italian but the similarities end there. Comparing Maldoror to Necromass would be more fitting, but even that is a bit pointless.

I liked these guys better when they were called Funeral Fog.

Horrible band all the way through. Mortuary Drape? Yeah sure BlackMass boy, good joke -just admit you're close to the guys or one of the band members even.

Finally got Ars Magica in the mail today. It's not a huge masterpiece, but I like the way it mixes Scandinavian Black Metal with the classic "italo-gothic" style of Death SS. Works quite well.
