Anthrax. FoM is good, but that jew of scott ian had too much success.

Testament. first two albums are good, but they're late... too much success.

yep - but apparantly they're the biggest thing right now.. not only by danish standards

They even get played in German mainstream radio on a regular basis. Every time I hear these vocals I just want to run away screaming -- the guy sounds like present day James Hetfield only 20 times more annoying!

My old band did support for Volbeat back in 2005 around the time of the first album. 200 people at most that evening ... Now they play stadiums!

They still suck though!!!!

Great thread. The opposite would be interesting too

Bands I love that became more "popular" than i would have expected. We're talking UG popular that is. Not "stadium/TV" popular.

Bands no one cared a few years ago and are now "hyped" and sought after.

CIRCLE OF OUROBORUS & URFAUST. Both bands I totally love and discovered in 2007 and back then i didnt know a soul who listened to COO and the few who knew URFAUST laughed at it with the weird vocals and shit.
Now I see URFAUST patches on die-hard metalheads who despised Urfaust not that long ago.
Maybe quality takes over in the end?

Otherwise GOATMOON. UG popular of course but still. I dont understand the fuss. They're good at best IMO. I enjoy their last album while aknowledging it's not special. Maybe ´twas just a momentary hype?

And SUNNO))) come on. Though now returning moderately to pits of oblivion, and though I really dig some of their stuff, dry cleansed drone? I like weird experimental but i never knew so many people did. Or maybe ´twas just a phase for most "fans"

Their celebrity status has nothing to do with their music though, it's pretty much all a result of constant Nergal popstar behaviour.

Mastodon I guess? I find nothing valuable in all of their music I've heard. Volbeat too, except they're much offensive to me.

New Darkthrone? Sure we're talking about once most important metal visionaries, but the fact that there's still so much (positive) fuzz around them, much more than around your regular classic bands' corpses is still surprising given their latest utterly mediocre "true" metal revival is outdone by many bands with ~20 years old members, or even by Satanic Tyrant Werewolf.

Cannibal Corpse.

Violently misogynistic lyrics + bland semi-technical death metal + controversial album covers = twenty years of very unlikely success.

I don't know much of their material except for the early stuff, but I don't think it's unfair to say the Ace Ventura connection has kept them in the stratosphere of popular conscience for twenty fucking years

AKA people are fucking morons

No hate

I feel like Portal are name checked way more than actually listened to.

Portal. i literally cannot believe about 9 out of 10 people who claim they like them. i actually think these people are totally full of shit. it's not portal's fault - i think they're pretty good, myself - but most of the people who claim to like them don't seem to actually like weird music at all so it seems absolutely incongruent that they "like" portal. just seems like a trendy thing to say you like Portal. i don't get people.

I have exactly the same opinion.I was buying their albums - have to admit- actually because I buy almost everything that comes from Australia and trust blindly the aussie black/death .
When I heard them ,I was so disappointed.Noisy, anarchic, chaotic structures not sharp and 'certain' riffs.I am a Vomitor fan and maybe I cannot 'catch' their 'progression' and experimentality..
Actually their music is not memorable.that's the problem.

Entrails - so what if they were copycats of Entombed already in 1990? I bet they sucked really hard back then and they still do. (Well, they're an OK live band, but really nothing special). This drums sound might be even gayer than that of any metalcore band next door: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeurxdwV25o
How come that this band is on Metal Blade is beyond me.

Just cashing in on the biggest of many Swedeath bands that came out of that revival trend. I actually like the band but you're right, those drums are awful. The drums and everything else sounded better on their previous album.

I have never heard of this Volbeat band before this thread. I think I will never check them out, ha!

It always amazed me how big/influential At the Gates became. They inadvertently created a whole generation of shitty bands after they were broken up.
